Welcome to Librarium Online!
Good morning to all,
The best tactic, nowadays, is to stick your Mage in a unit to afford some protection. Naturally, I have some questions on how to go on about this.
1. Which unit(s), would be the best?
2. Should I even consider slapping my Mage, on a steed, and send him off with a "calv" unit?
3. Would it be reasonable to stick a HTH character, within the same unit as the Mage?
Please feel free to add anymore information, which I should know about this subject.
Thank you, in advance, for your time.
I would never put a mage in a front-line combat unit, just too weak and squishy, as cannot wear armour. Better off in an back-stop unit, or else behind a line of the good troops, so they cannot be targetted directly.
Reavers are quite low AS and should be galloping down the battlefield to disrupt, so probably not best place for a mage, same with Shadow warriors. Units like White Lions and SM are generally going to see a lot of combat.
If deployed in a unit, always make sure you have a character or champion nearby....
Placing a mage on a horse is a very cheap way to build up resilience, though not much - 5+ armour save still isn't brilliant

Ive always had trouble with this. Once my unit gets into combat i could either jump out and get risked getting shot or blown by magic or i could get them squished in combat. Should i put them in a unit of archers, i would just have to move them up a few inches on my first turn. Have any of you put them in dragon princes?
I don't think that there is a 'right' answer to this question.
I don't put mages in cavalry however because
1) best thing about Reavers is fast cavalry rules and with a mage they lose this (no fleeing then moving as normal with a character in the unit)
2) Combat units (SH and DP) generally want to maximise frontage for kills, you could make the mage the 7th across in a heavy cavalry unit and always try to manuevre it so he was out of combat though I guess.
Our archers move and shoot but to put them inside 24" of enemy cuts down one of their greatest advantages that is their terrific range.
Spears are good you don't lose anything at all except that eventually the mage ends up in combat.
Elite infantry are ok but you lose a high WS high S attack and gain very little.
What it comes down too is battlefield role and which lore/spells you chose. Aside from not using cavalry I don't mind where I put a mage, remember give him a mount and you can still put him in infantry with no drawbacks.
I like to keep my mages in a small unit of archers that follows behind my main units. I've never really had a problem keeping them safe this way. Though with Teclis I try to be a little more careful and have him in a unit with 10 PGs and just kinda do the same thing, shooting just bounces off this unit. Also can put you're mage on a horse so when things get thick he can run out of whatever unit hes in faily fast.
I'm sticking my lvl 4 in a unit of 20 Phoenix Guard with full command (which might be too many PG, we'll see). Then I'm sticking a Noble in there to issue challenges should the need arise, otherwise I'm just going to kill all the units around the mage so that none can be directed towards him.
