I have just bought the HE battalion and now im a bit stuck!
Im not sure whether to buy PG or WL and korhil or caradryan.
Also any help on tactics with He battalion would be nice.
Personally I prefer the White Lions - while the Phoenix Guard might stick around a bit longer thanks to their Ward Save, the White Lions' S6 attacks mean that they've more chance of killing their opponents off, especially if the unit is fighting something heavily armoured compared to bog standard troops..
I prefer the phoenix guard, its really up to your play style and personal opinion on which of the 3 (lions, guard, or swordmasters) you really want/need in your army. I prefer the guard bcause like sorberec said they can bog down units pretty nicely and hold them for quite some time then flank with the swordmasters next turn or thanks to them having fear if you put a beefy hero in or a battle standard with the battle banner your more likely to make them auto break thanks to your fear, your 4+ ward save and always striking first. just make sure your unit size is at least 20 strong if your going to play the guard to make use of your fear. I rarely use the lions.
Initially I think that I would buy White Lions, they are effective in small units regardless of the game size so still viable in smaller games.
If I were building up to a 2000 pt game then I would buy Phoenix Gaurd, they need a unit of at least 15 to make their causing fear effective and this is expensive in both points and $$, so less useful in small games.
I hope this helps.
for my part i like both... in a 1000 pts game ive played twice the same list and did great
heroes were korhil(with the PG) and Caradryan(with the WL)
troops 10 archer full command, and 20 spearmen full command
special unit 9 WL full command and 9 PG full command
i like that mix
Personally I think the PG are gold - that ward save, and heavy armour, and fear - makes them incredibly resilient both on the way into a fight, and once they get there. Causing fear vs. being stubborn - well, the merits really depend on the unit size when you get down to it.
Woodsmen is a nice trait, too.
Bottom line is that they all cost the same - tailor your force to the situation you're in. If you want those high WS, lots of attack units, then it's SM. If you want a solid, more versatile unit that hits marginally harder - lions. If you want the nigh-indestructible block of doom, I'd say PG.
i would take white lions, becaus i like them a lot and PG need ranks to win combat, white lions don't becaus they habe a much higher strenght, so they will wound easyer and they have stobborn which allows you to rol your normal leadership if you lose, and the WL have the woodsmen and lion cloak special rule, where the PG have the 4+ ward save.
p.s: i think the white lions have a much cooler fluff for your army
thanks for the help.
Im going to buy 10 white lions, korhil and a lion chariot now!
