I Know this is drastic but with the new chaos challenge rules i often equip my archamge with the talsiman of saphery and fiener's robe, these items make the mage virtually untouchable apart from poxy deamons who take the mage on, but otherwise he negates the effects of the vital challenges and lets your troops get rid of enemy front ranks
Its an expensive combination, but agree in certain situations this would be useful. However, I see mages as more useful with casting items to allow them to use the awesome spells they have at their disposal

I keep my archmage with a champion and nobel bsb with banner of sorcery. I always take the bsb so this is a great place to put him.If they are in a unit of sm then the enemy will most likly not attack back and even then they will try kill my nobel
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
Teclis has a wonderful sword. But I do not rush him into combat. It is a shame that the HE lord chooses could not take that sword. My daughter and I both play HE an we tend to try to keep our casters out of combat. With the exception of the Grim. My daughter plays a dragon mage and sometimes she has to get the mage into combat with the flamining sword from fire lore.
