Could you guys help me out? I am loving High Elves and want to start them very soon and I would like to do some mega-shooting/mega-magic stuff. Could you guys mention some of the "standard" magic builds and some of the items that a tend to be the most used?
Now I understand you want heavy magic and shooting. HE have good archers 30 inch range but I suggest that you do not upgrade them besides leather armour. The hawkeye gives you a better BS but at six shoots it is not worth the points. By the same token you do not want to give them a banner because that is an easy 100 for you enemy to capture. As they are not a close combat unit a musician makes no sense either.
RBTs are a must. You only have two choices of rare units, wareagles are the other one. A wareagle is a must as a march blocker and to charge warmachines.
HE may not have some of the best magical items around but they do have some that can get the job done.
Archmage at four level gets 100 points of magical items. The vortex shard is expensive but it waste one entire magic phase of your enemy. We do not use that one and you will see later why. Another choice is the book, a lot of points, which makes any double besides 1's irrestable force as long as you make the min. reguired to cast the spell. If you roll four dice there is a 75 or 80 percent chance doubles will be rolled. There is a stone which eliminates magic within 6 inches including weapons. I believe that is over price also. Now when we get down to the mage level you only have 50 points. Those items can be taken by the archmage also. Just remember you can only have one arcane, one enchanced and one talisman. Also you can not give the same magical item to different mages. With two exceptions dispell or power stone.
Mages as stated before get 50 points. There is a staff which allows you to choose spells vice rolling for them. There is a wand which gives you another spell besides the normal two. Does not sound like a lot but numbers again. Instead of a 2/6 chance of getting a certain spell 33 percent you get a 3/6 or 50 percent of getting that spell. You get a choice of a couple of rings with bound spell which can help out. Seeing the look on your opposite general face when one of his star magical items is eliminated is worth the points. Being able to cast a 2d6 magic missile every turn with no die rolling is worth the point cost. Sure it can be dispelled easily but your enemy may forget about it. I have forgotten those items and I see better generals than me forget it also. You can choose a crystal which allows you to steal one of your opponents power die and add it to your dispell pile. A staff which gives you +1 to cast or +1 to dispell. You have a gem which increase your chance to cast one turn from the lore of fire. Works great with a dragonmage. There are other items which can be used also.
One banner which you have to take is the banner of sorcery. Helps out your power dice pile.
My daughter uses Teclis. Yes he is pricey but look at what you get. He can use all eight lores and High elf. He knows all the spells of his choosen lore, no die rolling. He comes with a pretty good sword that you hope he never has to use. He is just to valuable as a magic caster. He comes with a staff which gives him d3 to both power and dispell die. Then he comes with the book as mentioned above. Comes with a built in dispell scroll which has a chance of removing that spell from your opponent's mind. That could be really deadly to a vampire raising dead.
And the first spell from HE lore is drain magic. This adds to the min that your opponent must roll to cast.
Now that I wrote all of this I hope you have a army book to look at. That is the very first thing that you will have purchase.
HE lore is the best all round lore around. People will argue that but this is still America and they have the right to be wrong. I mean best all round and here is why. You get a protection one, one that helps out your shooting remember magic then shooting, courage helping out close combat, a 2d6 magic missile, a remain in place spell which can really hurt lower armour opponents and destroy an enemy's magical item
Thanks for the response! That was very thorough.
Check out some of the tacticas in the Tacticas subforum, there you will find some pretty good builds and standard core builds used by most HE players, myself included.
5000p. High Elves
Ive got to disagree there gary.
I have to say that Lore of Vampires is a better lore than Lore of High Magic
Firstly, We have a healing spell, so instead of worrying about defence we can just bring back the dead even with bad rolling it matters little.
We have Raise Dead which can be used to block enemies from shooting, redirecting enemies and stopping enemies from getting away.
We have a movement spell that acts as a combat booster at the same time.
We have a 2d6 magic missile also (although your ring truly is a nice bound item)
We have Curse of Years which is a better version of Flames of the Pheonix
Weve got wind of undeath which is a nice spell in a 2k game or doubles and can be used valuably to hold units all game.
And weve got our mass Summon/Heal Spell
I personally have to say lore of vampires is better only because our spells can be cast more with more effect.
I think arguements over the most effective Lore when you are talking about High magic and Necromantic lore are a bit of a moot point- they are both extremely powerful!
PLAN CLAN MAN!!
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man- S. Johnson
well, VC gets everything better than HE, no question there (magic items, characters, troops, etc.), but our lore is pretty good still.
Yes the VC lore is very good. Who would not want to be able to raise your dead back to fill up the ranks of units as they are trying to get the enemy into combat. VC have a spell like flames of pheonix which is as good or better. Some would probably say better and one of them would be me because I have seen it used against me. I do not play VC nor do I like thier sytle of play. Therefore I am not arguing about the best, I said that for me and my style of play HE Lore was the best.
