What do you guys think about this? I think it could be pretty devastating at 5** points + items (lvl 4). He could have the ring of fury and the seerstaff of saphery.
Personally I think that he'd be asking to be shot off it and would cripple your army like any other dragon.
Lacking any serious means to protect the Archmage, you would have a Dragon unit which is great at churning out high strength attacks and needs to be engaging enemy units to keep it safe from enemy fire, coupled with a very weak warrior unit.
It would be pretty nasty, and would make your Archmage very resilient to mage-hunting units, but as stated, unless you can give him a reasonable save, then you are gpoaying a LOT of points for a Bodyguard unit, which could be just as effectively a Noble with a greatsword or a unit of Swordmasters. Babysitting a mage is not what the Moon Dragon is for, its an economical way to get Terror and decent strength attacks into your army.

I think the dragon mage would fill the particular niche that the OP was looking for. With the silver wand he essentially becomes a weak level 3 caster who can easily make your opponent burn up dispel dice. He could be combined with a level 4 archmage in the same list as well as the banner of sorcery to give you a very offensive magic based list.
An archmage is meant to throw magic but not get into close combat.
Even Teclis has a great sword but when combined with his 1 attack it is a total waste. Bears anger works better than that.
A dragon is meant to destroy stuff. When you put the two together you have a combination which by defination does not work well. Kind of like the LSG is a compromise between archers and spearman.
If you want to take a mage on a dragon try this.
Dragon mage upgraded to second level on a sundragon. Give him a silverwand +1 spell bear with me, Guardian Phoneix +5 ward save and something else. A dragon mage gets 1 free power die when he casts a spell. This is free not coming from your pool. By giving him the an additional spell he gets to cast three spells and can use a free power die each time. Lore of fire is nothing to complain about. Look at the lore of fire spells. The first four can be casted with two die with a good chance of getting it off. 5 and 6 are a much more difficult and may require you stealing another power die from the pool. A second level dragon mage can actually use 4 die. 2 for his level, one from the pool and his free one. When rolling for spells you can always use 1 or 2 if you roll a 5 or 6. What I look for is 3, the burning head.
Please stay with me for a minute. You use the burning head spell and all it takes is one unsaved wound to require a panic test. Then during the shooting phase the dragon breathes on the same unit and does one unsaved wound they have to take another panic test. Yes the sun dragon only has a STR 2 breath weapon but what the heck.
I offer you this as a difference from the moon dragon and archmage combination. But you know what the bottom line is. What ever you want to play is what you are going to play. My daughter wants the dragon mage and a lord on a star dragon. Boy can you here the yells about cheesy. Then they see that she is only nine.
A dragon mage would do better. Wu=ith the silver wand and guardian phoenix at level 2 he is the best with out giving out free points. I would never do that as mages on dragons are a waste of points.
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
If you're feeling suitably reckless you could also try the silver wand and ring of fury combination.
I haven't used it myself but I have been assured by our resident gingerninja that it works.
For the archmage on moon dragon, forlaith robes would protect against non-missiles and combat, then add ring of fury and silver wand and your set. As long as you can see magical attacks coming, should be fairly safe!
Unfortunately the RObes are model on foot only, I fell into that trap myself.
