I currently own 26 swordmasters. I was thinking of doing 3 units of 8 swordmasters with full command. Is 8 too few? What's a decent side for Swordmasters?
Also, how would you use them?
8 is either too few or too many. 6 wide no ranks is effective as is 6x2.
Chances are 8 wide is too big and if you put 2-3 in the back row they will never see combat, the unit will break before they get up there.
hope it helps
I was thinkging two ranks of 4. But I see what you're getting out now. I'll probably go with 6x2
8 is fine although not "optimal" I think that I would break it into 12 (2x6) with command and warbanner (or other magic standard) then have 2 units of 7 with champions. At the end of the day both units will be as successful, the small ones of 7 are really designed as flankers which rely on killls while the other has good static res and should do some kills.
4x2 is pointless now as you need 5 for a rank.
Just my opinion

3 units is nice, but I wouldn't give them banners, champion and musician at most. Too risky running a standard in a small unit, 6 X 2 with FC makes more sense if u want the combat res.
I like running units of 7x1. I upgrade one with a blade lord giving him the amulet of light, magical attacks for the whole unit. One I give a Standard banner with the banner of ellyrion. The other is just naked. Swordmasters need protection and my manner is to hide them in woods or behind them. Sometimes it works and sometimes I make a mistake or two. My daughter runs a big block with a mage. The mage takes sacred incense -1 to hit and give them the banner of arcane protection. Against a heavy shooting army it does not work but neither does my msu.
I use units of 6 or 7 depending upon points available and find that you can screen them pretty well behind cavalry or other infantry units b4 popping them out at the right moment. Think of them as Empire detachments and use them the same way.

that's not that great, they should be at least 7 wide in my opinion as the standard doesn't get great weapon attacks so with a banelord 7 wide= 2 normal attacks and 13 strength 5 attacks.
then again in small battles (if you take away command) thats a fine size
I really don't understand where we get these misconceptions from? Standard bearers in units get Great Weapon attacks if their unit is armed with Great Weapons. Battle Standards ge Great Weapon attacks if they are armed with Great Weapons. The standard bearer in a unit of swordmasters is exactly the same as another RnF model in every way, other than he adds +1 to your CR, gives away VPs if the unit loses a combat and runs. In fact whilst you have other models in your unit, the standard can't even be targetted, so in fact he is actually a "unit" level upgrade
Swordmasters in two ranks of 6 is a great unit size. They have +1 static Cr with their rank, can negate enemy ranks and continue to do so even after taking casualties, and can churn out 13 attacks (my lucky number) on the front rank at S5...
