Recently had a brain blast and just want to know what the cheese factor would be on this.
23 spearmen, FC with a Warbanner
Throwin a BSB with Battle banner
This gives my unit of spearmen +1 with an additional D3 to combat res. Along with rank bonus and hopefully dealing a few wounds, you can destroy opposing units during combat res and potentially run them down. Makes for a brutal core unit at relatively cheap cost.
That's a nasty combination, but I would give the Spears a Lion standard to ensure that they hold, and probably wouldn't put a model as expensive as the Battle banner bearer in teh unit, he is more useful at the pointy end of a unit, alongside rnf warriors who can actually kill stuff....
First of all, its D6 combat rez not D3. And yeah, its cheezy. My friend runs runs a block of 20 white lions FC with warbanner. Sticks his BSB in there with the Battle Banner. Its nasty
+3 for ranks
+1 for outnumber(most of the time)
+D6 Battle Banner.
Average of 10 combat rez and rerollable stubborn. Nasty.
This is a nasty combination. Unfortunately I do not use it because if I run a lord I put him on a star dragon. I do run a hero with the white lions but not a lord. I will have to keep that in mind if I decide to drop the dragon.
The hero with teh White Lions could be a battle-standard bearer, and then could carry the appropriate banner, so you coudl run both no?
Warbanner + BSB/Battle Banner would be very effective for adding lots of extra CR, up to 8 without ranks and kills. Regardless if you put this on spearmen, WL or whatever...I think your gonna here a lot of crying. Battle Banner is cheesy enough, its probably a little overkill going with the war banner. You can never have too much CR, but you can have more than you need in 1 unit...this situation would probably fall under the latter, especially when putting them with killy, stubborn WL.
I find a big block of spears w/ command and Battle Banner to be more than sufficient to break just about anything out there.
I think that it is particularly nasty with DP, who will then have more static res than most of the units they are charging.
Battle banner is an offensive weapon, you really want that unit to win it's combats putting it on WL is a total waste, if they loose they have ld 8 anyway, give it to SM and Phoenix Gaurd and you have a very effective combat blosk that will almost never lose a round of combat.
I would argue that SM have plenty of killing power on their own and should be used in small units anyway, while PG are fear causing and will auto break if they win combat and simply outnumber. Outnumber being the key there. With ranks, std, ASF and their ward save, they should be pretty close without the extra D6, even without they have 9Ld and are a better bunker for BoS.
I really think spears need this more than any unit, yes they get plenty of attacks, but if they get into combat with a heavily armored foe, or flanked, they can use this to overcome and still crank out a win maybe. The bigger the spear block the more you need this banner to keep them around. I think our specials can stand on their own (exception of maybe DPs that get charged, but you would be better off putting a combat hero/prince with them maybe?)
You need to be crushing the enemy in teh fights that you want, I feel that investing so much in a "speed-bump" or support unit is unjustifiable. We can't afford to let teh enemy hit our units on their terms. If your spears are getting charged by superior enemies, then something has gone awry elsewhere, and you have bigger worries. I would rather that my DPs win a combat with a combat res of +10 and chase down the enemy elite infantry/cavalry unit possibly redirecting into other foes, rather than the spears scrape a draw.
I would rather that my relatvely weak, but VERY resilient Phoenix Guard crush an enemy in SCR and force them to roll snake-eyes and hence disengage my hammer block, rather than see them bogged down
I prefer not having to rely on stubborn to pull through a unit of White Lions.
Wow, you guys have put my +6-7 for Bretonnians to shame (BSB with WB, VoD in a unit of Knights with a SB and 2 ranks, outnumbering 1).
But in all actuality, run this against people playing CR heavy armies, or against undead/daemons, that way you can destroy their units through CR.
