I have a decent sized High Elf army based on the last codex. I am looking to trim down the amount of units that I have. I have decided to make a 2k army list with a specific goal in mind and pretty much just stick with that list.
I want my High Elf army to be magic heavy, simple as that.
I want to do whatever I can to dominate the magic phase with this army. My secondary goal would be shooting. Forget dancing around the field. I am happy to sit still and cast spells and shoot at my opponent all day long.
I recon that I would need one hand to hand unit. Which one though? If I am doing things right then my opponent should be weakened by the time we engage in hand to hand combat. A defensive unit would not be what I am looking for. I would need a purely offensive unit to finish off enemy units. Which High Elf hand to hand unit would fit that description?
An army list would be great! More realistic would be which units to take and which ones to avoid, with reasons why please. Keep in mind that I am shooting for a 2k army, simple as that.
Any thoughts or tactics would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
I have written a list for something like this, it was based around a large unit of Seagaurd.
Bearing in mind what you have said I think that what you want is a couple of units of Swordmasters for your combat units. You can keep thes to minimal sizes and they can be relied upon to do ok in combat.
My idea for your list would be;
Archmage, Teclis if you like but whatever you prefer.
2 mages one with seerstaff (could put a dragon mage here)
Mounted and Barded BSB with Banner of Sorcery (or Radiant Gem of Hoeth)
2x 10 Archers, Could go with Seagaurd for better combat save but less range.
2 Units of Swordmasters (could be anywhere from 7 to 14 command or not your call)
1 to 3 units of Reavers or Shadow Warriors. These will be vital for marchblocking and hunting enemy warmachines.
3 Bolt Throwers
1 Eagle, To work with Reavers and Shadow Warriors.
You really want the Banner of Sorcery in there somewhere, it just gives our magic phase a bit more oomph.
Dragon mage is great but it depends how you play, they are very vulnerable, if you go down that path I would give the BSB the gem for the dispelling power. Dragon doubles as a really good eagle though in a list like this but needs to be babied big time, can't afford to have people shooting at it.
I would take the archers (for the range) over the seagaurd but either will do the job, could go with a unit of each I guess. 10 Seagaurd with command and Warbanner + BSB should be more than a match for most of the units that reach them but same can't be said for the archers.
Depending on points I would take one large (12) and one small (7) unit for the SM, these are for exactly the same purpose but the big one is to draw fire from the other, if you only need to protect one unit then it is much easier for you, 2 even size units and you are splitting your defensive spells. One of these units could be give the Banner of Sorcery if necessary.
I would go with at least 4 units of fast disruptors, 2x 5 reavers, 1x 5 shadow warriors and 1 eagle these can march block and hunt fown those most deadly warmachines that will crush entire units at range, (grudge throwers, cannons etc) you can't affor to lose the range battle.
I do have Teclis and plenty of Mages so no problem there.
No Seaguard so I will need to stick with basic archers, have plenty.
I do like those Swordmasters. I had hoped that they would find a place in this army.
I do not have any Shadow Warriors but do have plenty of Reavers.
I do have 3 Bolt Throwers but am limited too taking 2 by the 2k darn it. Those are very nice.
And I do have at a few Eagles.
Only thing that you mentioned that I may not have is the BSB. That will be easy to come by. And after I trim down my army I will look into getting some of those Shadow Warriors.
Thank you for taking the time to explain and answer my questions. This will certainly get me started in the right direction. I will tally up some point costs and see what I can come up with as far as a list goes.
Unless you are playing less than 2k you have 4 rare slots so you can take 3 if you want. You may have been thinking of 6th ed rules where eagles and RBT were both 2 for 1 rares.I do have 3 Bolt Throwers but am limited too taking 2 by the 2k darn it. Those are very nice.
THis list won't win you any friends, it isn't fun to play against. If your opponent is fast enough there isn't musch you can do, if not there isn't much they can do.
