Hey guys, I'm just about to start building my elves today but before I do, I'm trying to think of the recommended widths these guys would be in as well as the correct block sizes.
Spearmen: 5 or 6?
Swordmasters: 5 or 6?
White Lions: 6 or 7?
Phoenix Guard: 5 or 6?
If anyone could give some advice on these, that'd be great; I'll be making the models to fit into movement trays I'm making so I'll need to think of dimensions.
I would normally take everything 6 wide apart from PG which would usually be 5
I have never used White Lions so i dont really know what works there,
Archers should just be put so that all can shot (10 wide if on flat, 5 if on a hill)
Archers: 10, possibly 5 in two ranks on a hill
White Lions: preferably 7 if you can use them to walk through a forest
PG: 5 for best use of fear and static combat res
Hope it helped,
5000p. High Elves
Generally the sprears will have four full ranks of course. They are cheap enopugh to consider going 6 wide for extra attacks. As has been said, Phoenix guard are usually taken in a multi-rank block and 5 wide.
White lions vary a bit as to how many ranks and wide in my experience, but usually not four ranks in my experience. Swordmasters are used in 1 or 2 ranks because they are al about killing. I have even seen 1 rank of seven wide, though this might be a bit cumbersome to wheel or flank with.
It depends on your opponent - for spears, against 25mm wide base opponents, if you go 5 wide (100mm) then they can only hit you with a maximum of 5 models themselves. This is important against units like Chaos Knights, Black Orcs and other such heavy, tough and nasty units. It also means units like Ogres on wider bases can only get 3 models on the unit.
Against other opponents, you can spread to 6 wide to get an additional 3 attacks through spears...
For SM and WL, 7 wide is good, as then you can get 7 atacks against a 5-wide ranked infantry unit. I also reform PG to be 7 wide if I think the extra attacks are more valuable than rank bonus (e.g against relatively weak opponents like Empire spears or Bretonnian peasantry) to get 2 additional S4 WS5 attacks.
