hey guys i got a game coming up this weekend against dark elves and im looking for some ideas on whats good against them. I play very defensively and I feel against darkelves I need to be especially careful He will probably try and be cheesy so I have a feeling he will either try a shade deathstar, 2 hydras and/or a big asfhag executioner unit with a cauldron.
What i really hate when playing my HE versus DE is their hatred, which is every round against HE. Unless you wipe out the front row, you will be getting some pain sent back to you, every turn. On spearmen this is negligible as we fight in 3 rows. But our more elite units like White lions, Phoenix guard and Swordmasters, we need to do as much damage to them so they can't hit back at all, and thuse those sickening re rolls won't work. ASF helps tremendously in this, allows you to be more defensive as even if they charge you, you go first. Assassins is another psycotic hatred of mine for DE, they can go before everyone in our army execept Tyrion. As far as army builds, we are pretty much equal to DE, we seem to each have something to counter the other. They have hatred to counter our ASF, we have drain magic to counter their power of darkness. Their units are even darker versions of our own. Similar strenghts and weaknesses. I take Teclis and hes very effective. He is both offensive and defensive magic wise.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
I played a game against him before using 2 blocks of phoenix guard and did pretty well but a part of me feels i could of gotten away with swapping 1 of the blocks out for a big spearmen and using the spare points elsewhere. We arent going to use special characters I dont think, If I bring teclis hes taking shadowblade no thanks lol. Our gaming group asks if special characters are ok or allowed it seems more fair that way.
I would opt for the trump card - the Star Dragon is more powerful than anything he can take, and a suitably equipped character riding said Star Dragon should be nigh-on invincible. Armour of caledor, Vambraces, lance and a trinket like talisman of Loec.
Regarding magical attack/defes,e DE have a fantastic magical attack, and their defense is very good as long as their mages are not nearby in the form of the Ring of Hotek. If you spot any zones that DE mages are not approaching, then chances are its because the Ring is in a unit there.
I would spam lots of drain magic and not a lot else against Dark Elves, and try to kill off his mages using eagles. Magic against DE can cause nasty things to happen.
Remember that HE units are ITP against DE, so you can get off reliable charges against any fear/Terror causers and you also have faster units (apart from Dark Riders) so use them.
Do you know if he's going heavy magic or not? If he goes no magic with the ring of hotek Teclis has his power rather reduced, but if he goes magical, Teclis is sorted. This link has the two lists I'd play, 1st against magical, 2nd against non-magical. I'm a big fan of dragon princes rather than elite infantry as, particularly against Cold one Kinghts, charging them so they don't get a strength bonus generally results in a run down unit of coldones.

Sitting back and shooting works well as their as tough as we are, just make sure you deploy back 6" so his RXB have to march before they can shoot so you have time to whittle them down with archers and RBT fire. Reaver bow pretty useful as well, especially if they take the ring of halve ballistic skill.
If you take a stardragon make sure not to charge a character with pendant of Khaleth, you'll be there a long time.
If I were the dark elf general, the moment you put down a star dragon I would know what the pendants job was. With dragon's move you can avoid that guy provided it is an open list and you know whaich one he is.
Most of what I know about fighting Dark Elves is in my contribution to the tactica.
I agree about the Phoenix Gaurd being our best foot troop, DP are still great, but mine always die to Cold One Knights after drawn out combats.
Dark Elves have lots of dirty tricks up their sleeves. The Ring of Hoptek is particularly annoying (the one where doubles are miscasts).
I find playing dirty yourself is one way to go.
For example have a Mage with the staff that allows you to choose spells. Then go for Lore of Death, 'Walking Death' so one of your units causes fear.
The Standard of Balance is an excellent banner against Dark Elves. Read again, as well as being immune to psychology both sides lose any benefit of Hatred OR Frenzy.
This is obviously perfect against Dark Elves generally but especially Witch Elves and Cold One Knights.
Remember though both sides are immune to psycholgy so don't give this to the Pheonix Guard or a Unit you plan to cast 'Walking Death' on.
I watched one battle where a Dark Elf Dread Lord on Pegasus charged a Prince on a Dragon.
The Dread Lord had Lance and Potion of Strength and numerous magic items to provide him with a really good save. The High Elf player directed all his attacks towards the Pegasus. Killed it. Racked up 4 combat resolution (3 wounds and outnumbering) and the n auto broke the Dread Lord who feared the Dragon and was woutnumbered)
Essentially, Dark Elves have a lot of nasty tricks but aren't so hot on taking punishment so don't put all your eggs in characters and other things the Dark Elves can 'mess up' instread put your trust in solid blocks of 'Special Units' like Pheonix Guard and White Lions.
If you are playing defensivly I would take as many RBT's as poissible and then maximise your kills with it using Lore of Heavens and High Magic
Lore of Heavens for Second Sign of Amul, High Magic for Curse of Arrow Attraction and Fury of Khaine.
If I was going to go for Dragon Princes I would make them a real points sink and give them the War Banner and a BSB with the Battle Banner and don't make a big thing of it to your opponent. D6+3 static combat resolution is not to be sneezed at.
I just played a 4000pt game where this unit rolled through a unit of Cold One Riders, a Carnasaur, and unit of Saruses and then was able to wheel around to hit the temple guard in the rear.

Why are there scams? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q71FLDIMBc8
AVOID THE BLACKGUARD.
There's pretty much nothing you can do against them. With the ASF banner they will strike before anything we have except PG, and good luck trying to get kills with them. And even if you do win combat, they are ITP and Stubborn... good luck. They just hurt too much and are too annoying.
Beyond that, yeah, Ring of Hotek and Pendant of Khaelith are very frustrating. I like Ring of Corin against DE... hope one of your early magic phases is lucky, avoids doubles, and forces him to use his dice up... then Corin his Ring or Pendant. He'll blow a scroll, but you're that much closer to more successful magic phases.
Or just take a lord on a dragon. That's been said.
Fear me, mortals, for I am The Anointed, The Favored Son of Chaos, The Scourge of the World. The armies of the Gods rally behind me, and it is by My Will and by My Sword that your weakling nations shall fall. - Archaon, The Everchosen, Lord of the End Times
Of that 75% of attacks, 66% wound - so 50% of attacks actually wound, and of those 16.666% are saved by armour, and 50% of wounding and failed armour saves are saved by the ward - so in fact even with Eternal Hatred, a typical 11 attack front rank (5 wide inc champion) of BG will only kill 2.3 PG - IF they attack first (on the dice roll).
PG in return hit with 50% of attacks, wound with 66% of attacks, so 33.3% of attacks wound, and of these 5/6 kill, so 27.8% of attacks hitting will kill.
Now a PG unit has only 6 attacks in a typical front rank of 5, so thats 1.66 dead BG. And if teh front rank loses 2.3 attacks thats actually only 1 wound.
But if the PG strike first scoring 1.66 wounds, then the BG are down 1.66 attacks, and the BG kill 2 PG instead. SO PG are actually a pretty clsoe match for BG regardless, and the error is going to be sufficient that if the PG outnumber the BG or have an additional rank (likely due to their shooting resilience) the BG will lose. And this is a BG unit pimped with the ASF banner vs a naked PG with only champ and standard.

Why dont you try this out its been working wonders with me against warriors of chaos recently.
18 Phoenix Guard with Full Command- War Banner for Standard Bearer
BSB with Battle Banner Great weapon and Dragon Armour
Depending On how many points your game is Get a Prince with the Vambrances of Defense, Armour of Caledor, Talisman of Loec and Great weapon.
This unit does ridiculous combat resolution even if they kill one or two of your guys you are still able to get some ridiculous combat resolution after everything has worked out. Trust me i have done this to my cousin and i always win it is ridiculous how well it works. Just make sure you get them into combat and you will win no matter what.
i do realise that this unit can get shot to pieces but having mainly taken on Warriors of Chaos i have not had any problems with that
