Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I will be running a dragon mage and 1-2 other mages(lvl2). I don't have a unit of archers yet but I am considering them. So I guess I have two questions:
1) Will only 1 mage do ok with a dragon mage so that I can spend points on a noble for DP's or should I have 3 mages altogether?
2) Where should they go?
Any comments and advice would be great!
I would say an archmage with a dragon mage would allow you to dominate magic - but then your defence would possibly suffer so you might consider a scroll caddy (thats what I've always done when ive run a dragon mage)
Ultimate place has got to be in a big unit of Phoenix Gaurd - Ld9, 4+ ward save makes them very difficult to shift. also they can carry the banner of sorcery to give you another little boost.
Other places to consider:
Unit of Spearmen - simple large numbers and SCR are the key.
Unit of White Lions - VERY good armour save against shooting combined with the ability to easily dart into woods if need be.
Crew of an RBT - my personal favourite for a level 2 mage, from shooting they'll need 5+ to hit the crew, then 5+ again to hit the mage. When the enemy get close simply pop him out of there.
it ultimately depends on what role they are performing for the rest of your army. It also varies on what lore and spells you choose from to but for me since my play style is more defensive natured I put them in a big 20+ block of phoenix guard beside a noble (possibly 2 nobles). If they have little to no shooting I would consider putting them in archers. The only problem putting them in phoenix guard is when they reach combat your opponent is likely going to target your mage but putting some nobles beside your mage/archmage in the PG unit reduces the chances significantly.
This post (In Magic We Trust – 7th Edition High Elf Magic Tactica), in addition to some interesting thoughts on High Elf magic in general, has some ideas on keeping mages alive. It is worth a read. Chapter ten has the ideas on keeping mages alive. He likes sometimes to leave his mages outside of units. Anyway, give the post a read it is well-written and interesting.
Thanks for all of the advice!
I'm going to try him out with the RBT for my first game. The spearmen are my only big block at the moment and I don't want my mage in my only block of infantry. When I have PG as well I will give the mage a shot in either of the units. I don't have any imediate plans to add archers to my army but we will see after my first couple of games with the elves.
