Have 2 options was hoping to get some thoughts on them.
Noble, H.armour, shield, Sword of Might - 106
Mage, Silver Wand, Talisman of Protection - 120
10 Archers, Full command - 135
11 Spearmen, Standard, Musician, War Banner - 134
Mage, Silver Wand, Jewelof Dusk, Talisman of Protection, Gem of Courage - 145
13 Archers, Full Command - 168
16 Spearmen, Full Command, War Banner - 189
Any thoughts, I wanted to build up round a core of basic troops then expand into specials later.
First of all, I'd very much appreciate if you posted your list in the "Army List" section of this forum, thank you.
When I comes to your lists, our armies are one of the most difficult to make at low points costs, and more than one character is not the way to go in my opinion. At this point level, I'd go with a Noble with the Reaver bow and Enchanted Shield, a unit of archers and a unit of Swordmasters or White Lions for some hitting power.
Alternatively, you could go with a lvl. 2 Mage with Jewel of the Dusk, a unit of Spearmen and some Ellyrian Reavers.
These are the two setups I find the most effective. When playing a HE army, you need to exploit the fact that we only need one core unit at 500 p. So I only go with one core unit.
Hope you get some ideas,

I agree with Herman1004 that you only want to take 1 core unit. But since you are starting out with just core, and building up to other troops later, it's cool.
A couple things though:
In your first list, trade the Sword of Might for a Great Weapon. The Great Weapon will give you a better strength bonus (no need to worry about striking last since you have Speed of Asuryan), and it's cheaper. So change that and it will save you 7 points. Use the 7 points plus what you had leftover and add another model to one of your units, or add a Champion to your Spearmen.
In your second list, you've given your Mage two Arcane items, which is against the rules. So you'll have to change that up a bit.
Of the two lists, I prefer the second one because it makes better use of the Spearmen being able to fight in three ranks if they get charged. It's like Herman1004 said, one character is probably better because it allows units like your Spearmen to be more effective.

Thanks guys for all your help. I have finally decided to drop the mage an take a noble. My final selection for a 500pt starter army is now:
Noble, Great wep, H.Armour, Enchanted Shield - 107pt
10 Archers - 110
11 Spearmen, Full command, War banner (led by noble) - 144
5 White Lions, Full Command, Gem of courage, Banner of Arcane Protection - 140
The basic idea for this 'army' is:
The noble will have a 3+ save against shooting and depending on who is fighting can turtle up to get a 2+ save with 3 S4 attacks or use his great wep to cause 3 S6 attacks. sticking him in with 11 spearmen will mean when they get charged I will be able to protect him and throw out 12 S3 attacks with his!
the archers will whittle down low T low AS troops to help my units win CR or target any war machines/skirmishers/independant characters.
The white Lions will be able to withstand quite a lot of punishment for such a small unit 2+ save against shooting and a Magic resitance 2 should help get them all into combat and leave me 2 DD to protect the other units from magic, when in combat 6 S6 attacks should help see off any knights and if they do loose they are stubborn with the Gem of Courage which should help them stay in the fight until help arrives.
That's basically it, if anyone has any further thought please let me know.
If you plan sticking your noble in the spearmen unit, (which you should IMO) I'd consider dropping the enchanted shield, as it really won't help you. You should be striking with you great weapon anyway.
I like the rest though.
5000p. High Elves
This is the army ive put together for the league me and 3 friends are starting.
-20 spearmen full command-musician
-barded elvish steed
-sword of might
The basic idea is that the spearmen advance slowly whilst the Chariot takes on flank and the noble the other. Or both the chariot and the noble take the same flank.
The noble has a save of 2+ and all hits against him are rerolled. On the charge he will have +2 strength and +1 for following rounds. Should be pretty good in a 500 pt game.
Thoughts and comments appreciated,

Sorry to disappoint you Jive, but if he has a magic weapon he must stick to it and won't be able to use his lance.
concept of your list is good, details could be better
(you might help us if you tell us what models you have available)
