Got a little 1000 point tournament on Friday, but with the added rule that you dont have to pay any attention to minimum core choices or hero/lord limitations.
Although this rule limits one of the best things about the High Elves I am determined to defend Ulthuan's honour nonethe less.
I open up to the floor - what do you think I should take?
This really is a challenge for High Elves.
I guess that you could go down the Stardragon/ Dragon Prince line, probably the only Lord that would be worth taking, Archmages aren't really good enough at taking down the potential super characters you may end up facing.
I think that I would go one of 2 ways though
1) Dragon Princes, BSB Battle Banner, Noble with star Lance. Back this up with some magic defence and or some Bolt throwers or hunters.
2) A big block of White Lions or Phoenix Gaurd supported by some faster warmachine hunters and a battlebanner. White Lions as they are stubborn would be best and the chances are you will give up your flank at some point.
I am trying to figure out an effective way to use swordmasters in this situation and maybe they will shine as everyone jumps for their super combat troops and most massed shooting comes from core units.
I hope someone takes a slayer army (dwarves), a Bretonian writes a battle of 7 knights list and that someone turns up with two 500 pt vampire lords and a whole pile of zombies to raise.
I have no feedback as a new player, but that sounds like an interesting approach to a tournament, to say the least. I'd love to hear what others field and how it turns out!
Went into Games Workshop today and found out some extra rules for this tournament.
Apparently its going to be a take and hold job with 500VP for whoever is closest to the centre of the board after 6 turns.
To me that sounds like a definate 20xPG with Korhil job.
The short story is that I won.
The only really nasty list that I came up against was a WoC army with a Sorcerer Lord throwing 5 dice at Gateway and a Chaos Lord in a massive unit of Knights. With my mageless army I was pretty vulnerable but my Swordmasters took the worst of it leaving my PG and WLs to deal with the Knights, and ONE EAGLE to somehow take down the disk sorcerer.
My list was:
20 Phoenix Guard - Full Command, Banner of Arcane Protection, Skeinsliver
12 Sword Masters - Full Commans, Banner of Ellyrion
7 White Lions (Brilliant at flanking throughout)
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Worked pretty well with 2 smaller units hiding in woods waiting to flank and the PG holding against anything that it went up against.
I was really pleased to win without doing anything really cheesy. A good day for Ulthuan.
