Ok currently i have a mediocre range of models, and i wanted some good hitting power from the special range i have white lions and DP's. But i really want either some PG of SM. I'm kinda leaning towards SM's atm but what do you guys think? which would be more useful to have sooner in a 2000pt army?
Because most of your units are attacking units id aim take Pheonix Guard for an anvil bunker unit
I agree. 15 PG will pretty much hold anything up and then you can smash into their flank.
I personally do this with SMs AND PG, but ran a tournament recently with only 7 White Lions doing the flanking job and it worked REALLY well.
Plus, if this is important to you, PG are nicer models
I really dig the way they have bumped up the Phoenix Gaurd as far as it's elite status goes. In 5th Edition, they were really not that special a unit, and now they are a must have.
So I say go with them.
Yeah, I back the PG idea. I like them both, but if you've already got a decent attack element, the PG are a good idea to get next for variety.

Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
I use PG and WL in similar roles and have SM in smaller units as flankers, or cos they don't theoretically need the extra ranks to win.
So since you already have White Lions I would get Swordmasters to flank a large White Lion or Spearmen block.
You can use white lions to flank as well but in my head they aren't as good at it as swordmasters, no real reason for this really I just don't use White lions that way.
I disagree about Phoenix gaurd being cooler models as well, they are both pretty cool, PG are definitely more dynamic but I really like the SM models as I figure that they don't need to be that dynamic, they explode in combat and kill everything in a few seconds then go back to conserving energy for the next fight. PG are more likely to be caught in an action shot as they don't seem to kill that much.
PG might be some nice variety, just for the sake of variety. But if that doesn't matter to you, I would only take the PG if you need their Fear causing ability, e.g. you are building an all-comers list and are expecting to fight some undead armies, etc.
15 PG will definitely NOT hold up to everything. Sure they are tough, but to me the SMs are harder to kill and break because there is almost always nothing to fight back against them after they've whipped some backside.
Depends on what you are building your list for, in my opinion. Both have their uses. For straight-up "good hitting power," SMs are undoubtedly better. Try simulating how well 15 PG do against, say, 15 Black Orcs. Then try simulating 15 SMs against 15 Black Orcs. I've never done that myself, but I'm guessing the SMs will be better on average.

ok guys thanks heaps im thinking i'll go swordmasters, mainly cause by the sounds of things for PG you need a big unit and i'm not keen on static combat res. I like hard hitting units, thats why im also eyeing up a lion chariot.
or would maybe a couple of eagles be better?
If you enjoy hard hitting units then go with the Lion Chariot. I've used it in three games now (Empire, Ogres, Skaven) and it's been a beast in every game. It mowed down almost half the skaven army by itself. I'm debating getting another one because they are a blast to use, not to mention paint.
The lion chariot is awesome... I get the most compliments on my lions than anything else in either of my armies (I have a empire army as well). And the crew look awesome as well and have made me want to get some WLs just to go with the chariot for a Chrace contingent.
But my question is where are the stats for the lions? For the life of me, I can only find stats for Tiranoc chariot. Can someone help?
On topic, I dont have any SMs (yet) but I have a fifteen block of Phoenix guard that nearly wiped out my oponent on the weekend. They made to unit run in fear, one of them off the table, and wiped out a unit of handgunners while taking just one casualty. They ended the game with a standard and gained elite status. My friend isnt happy about meeting them again this weekend, plus they are too cool with their gleaming gold armour
