Hello fellow high elves,
I was very curious about how good this spell really was, so I wrote a little perl program to simulate a number of casts and get the average number of hits it produced, and here's what I got:
Average hits for 10000000 tries = 6.8316968
Now this is slightly less than what Fiery blast's average of 7!
so would you cast a difficulty 11 spell over a difficulty 8 just because it is NOT a "magic missile" (meaning it can be cast while the wizard is in combat) and has no range limitation??
it can be quite good if you are very lucky last time i played it i did cast it 5 times, 3 times with just 1D6 hits, but 2 times making 15+ hits. so it CAN destroy an entire units, you just can't count on it.
and yes i think Fiery blast is better, but sometimes you have no choice if you roll to choose your spells

Thing is, when I changed the program so that the caster "win"s on the opposing dice "tie", I get the following average:
Average hits for 1000000 tries = 9.573522
I would say this makes the spell worth the +11 difficulty. but as you said having to cast it 5 times to get a good result is horrible honestly.
Would you think it a reasonable house rule change? in cases where either party is interested in Lore of Fire that is?
I mean if there was any special circumstance where the player would have to setup in which the spell would become dangerous, then I wouldn't complain, but being consistently worse than a +8 spell is just ridiculous.
It allows your wizrd to be used as an artillery weapon from a hidden location. To pull this off you need 4 dice, and so are potetnially depriving the pool of dice on a level 3 - and you need a Lord Choice. High Elves have an advantage with Dragon Mages but Dragon Mages are not really what I would like to be doing this type of thing with.
