I'm having real difficulty in beating lizard men armies. We play about 1500pts. And due to this i find that my opponent has control of the magic phase. As he is only alowed to use lore of heavens, he generally opts to not cast in favour of storing power dice for the dispel phase - which makes my mages mostly usless. Also, shooting had very little effect, due to lizard men being toughness 4 and having a magic anti-missile bubble from the engine of the gods or whatever.
My next option is White Lions, and Sword Masters flanked by Dragon Princes and Lion Chariots.
How do you guys deal with the Lizardguys?
Our Elites butcher Lizardmen troops, but suffer to their missile fire, but Dragon Princes are certainly a good unit to cause havoc.
Additionally you could consider taking a fw giant eagles to take out the magic users (or SHadow warriors or Reavers).
Reaver Bow, Lance, Great Eagle Hero is good as well at taking out enemy characters - sniping lone characetrs and getting favourable charges against those which are in units.
I hadnt thought about that. A reaver bow on an eagle is a good idea. I'll try that next time
I am a lizard player that faces HE regularly. the things I don't like seeing are:
never use scouts vs lizardmen his skinks can just fire one volley and u dead
and they cost half the points.
i only used them to try them. S3 isn't too good against lizrds
Hold on - SHadow Warriors are skirmishing (-1 to hit) and can hide behind trees or walls (-1 or -2 to hit) and with BS4 Longbows, they can be march blocking other elements of the army, and if the skinks shoot your shadow warriros they aren't shooting you much nastier close combat troops.
Whilst that is true, the shadow warriors actually cost more than my better combat troops. I'd rather have another 10PG/SM/WL than the shadow warriors when facing lizard men.
Two of my good friends play lizardmen, and I've been playing HighElves for a long time. So here's what I can offer:
1) he stores his dice, and uses Lore of Heavens
You really don't need much magic defense if he's not blasting you with his own mages. Instead of stacking out on aggressive magic, just take some minimal defense, maybe 2 Lvl1 scroll caddies or something. Use the extra points to take units that might really damage him.
2) shooting is useless against T4
You have to know what to target with your shooting. Skinks avoid Longbowmen of any army like the plague. With an extra 6" of range on them at least, and the ability to wound their lightly-armored little butts on a 4+, the skinks make prime targets for our archer regiments. Since our spearmen can't really stand up to any kind of a lizard onslaught, it's best that we make the most of our mandatory core.
Our other shooting- namely the RBTs- do a great job against the lizards. With S4 and AP, we give them a -2 to their save and our 6 shots can usually drop at least a few of them. The fact that we can then load a single bolt and skewer a stegadon is always nice too.
3) Shadow Warriors
Best left at home. We need line-units who can stand toe-to-toe with the Lizards. Shadow Warriors take up our limited special choices points, when we would be better off buying 5 more SMs, PGs, or WLs. If you need march-blocking, you can always get an Eagle for cheaper, faster, more reliable tactics.
4) Character Choice
I wouldn't go all-out on characters. Lizardmen fighters are GOOD fighters, so we can't really toss a CC character into the fray and think he'll be a good idea. However, there is one particular thing that our fighters are good for, and that's nullifying Stegadons.
If you charge a Stegadon and challenge the skink on top of it, he HAS to answer. He's not in a unit, he can't flee to the rear, and as long as the Steg is on it's own, nobody else can answer the challenge. Whether or not the Steg will fight doesn't matter, because you have ASF and you charged. Target your attacks at the skink, and kill him. Once he's dead, the EotG on the Steg's back is useless.
I use a Noble on an Eagle with a Lance, heavy armor, and a shield for this. Cheap and expendable, and great for killing skink priests. If you wanted, you could give him a good bow, and make him a threat to other units as well. Just understand that the stegadon he is chasing down will probably kill him in subsequent combats.
Our elite regiments really do fight well against the Lizardmen. I used to fight them with an all-cavalry list back when that was legal, but now you can get away with using groundpounders. Remember that several smaller regiments can make a difference here, but you have to be sly. He'll mob your MSUs with Skinks if he has the chance, and while you'll probably win the fight, you'll be bloodied and tied up for a round or two. If you have SwordMasters, you'll be fine, but WLs have trouble with hordes. That's where the archers come in to play- shoot the incoming skinks whenever you get the chance, and hopefully they won't be too much a bother when they hit you.
If you run with lots of cavalry, all the better. 1500pts is 100 special infantry, or 50 DPs. Granted, you'll have to buy core and a general of some kind, but there's no reason that a force of that size shouldn't be able to take the Lizards on the nose.
If you can get me a break down of his typical list, I can help you a little more. That's just the basics for handling the average lizards list. Everyone else here has been giving great advice too, so there's not much more to say.
I've played a few games against Lizardmen - most recent was 1500 HE vs. 1000 Lizards + 500 Dwarves, and we walked it.
Swordmasters, WL and DPs are all fantastically effective. Yes, a block of 20 saurus warriors can be a big roadblock, but you simply need to pepper it with a few bolt throwers, and then hit it on at least two sides with some great weapon bearing units for full effect.
Shadow warriors were fantastically effective vs. Skink skirmishers - yes, I had less, but I also got to pick my deployment, and shadow warrior fire is withering vs. skinks, who can't return it unless they want to close into range where, let's face it, you can look at charging them with better armoured, better armed skirmishers with Hatred. 5 SWs held off a dozen skinks, caused two panic tests, and had them off the field.
Granted, I've yet to face a Slann yet, but his magic wasn't that effective with a mage there vs. his skink priest, and one of his power dice stolen each turn...
