Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well, I am new and looking through my codex the Pheonix Guard seem like my favourate(sp) unit. This may be because I love the model or what I expect to be a frequent opponent has at least -2 to all armor saves with pretty much every shot. Regardless, being the noob I am the number in a unit has left me thinking, as I am not really sure how well these guys would work and the numbers they need to do it. Any pointers you could give on the unit will be very helpful to me and hopefully to other Newcomers to the High Elves ^^. Many thanks.
Generally they are a popular unit choice, more in higher points games as the units can get expensive.
Generally the units seem to be between 15 and 20+ depending on the points that you are playing. The consensus is that these guys don't win through kill rather through static combat resolution, so usually will have full command at least 2 ranks and hopefully outnumber then just win by 1 or 2 and auto break the enemy due to them being outnumbered by fearcausers.
They are also useful as they are immune to the other fear causers.
I think that they are our most reliable elite infantry, Static Combat res and their ward save is always going to do well but they are not as heroic as White Lions (who can fight on futilely to the last man) or flashy as Swordmasters (who can run in and rip something apart or never reach combat).
Persoanlly at low points (less than 1000) I prefer White Lions as my anvil unit as a unit of 10 can do the job due to being stubborn. In higher points (2000+) then PG are definitely better as you can give them decent sized units without cringing at the cost.
While on the topic of our elite infantry.
My friends and I have just spent an entire long weekend playing a simplified Mighty Empire campaign involving HE, VC, DE and lizardmen. We started around 400 and eventually worked our way to 1250, this is because the new comers DE and lizardmen only had enough models to do 1500 armies. Learnt quite a lot even though the DE and lizard players were new but their stat lines made them quite a challenge to defeat.
What I can say is that Swordmasters are great in battles against non-shooty armies (e.g. Vampires) but serve as mere arrow magnets against the other more shooty armies. In one battle against lizardmen, an entire squad of 6 SMs died by one round of shooting from Skinks. Having never played against shooty armies before, I learnt quickly that the only way to preserve those precious infantry (including Phoenix Guards and Whitelions was to have them languish behind woods or out of range of enemy shooters, particuarly the dangerous types with mulitiple shots. A 10 model group of Skinks decimated a 5 unit of Dragon princes and Swordmasters in one match and possibly the only serious damage the lizardmen did to me in the entire game.
Whitelions did extremely well in battles with at least 1 wooded area on my half of the board. Able to emerge unscathed from the woods to hit opponents in their weakest areas. As long as you don’t charge them at ridiculously powerful opponents, they will stay long enough to cause the enemy to break.
On a side note, I found Lore of beast to be extremely useful in dealing with lizards, able to neutralise Stegadons and groups of Cold Ones whilst Bear’s Anger at 4+ to cast is a steal in making your otherwise feeble Noble more than a match for a ScarVet.
Phoenix Guard is a very viable choice. They can do very well as an anvil unit and is also your primary unit to hold magical banners, like the Banner of Sorcery. If you don't play for fluff, but rather to win, I suggest you put Korhil in the PG unit, making them Stubborn...
5000p. High Elves
phoenix guard are great, but just as with WL and SM you need to have a specific job to do during the battle. it could be as simple as being a shelter for your mages, or being an anvil unit. their attacks won't do a lot damage, but their 5+AS and 4+ ward will save them from most things your opponent can throw at you.
i really love the sight of an enemy knights unit charging my PG, Pg's just refuse to die, and then flank-charge with White Lions. you should see your opponent's face when you say your attacking his horses with S6, and kill 3-4 of them, to outnumber them by fearcausers and overrun them lovely
Thanks guys . These guys seemed one of the most survivable units which I like. This has been a big help to me, but since I probs wont be going over 1000 points for a while they may not be the best unit choice for me... Ah well, models are awesome enough to make up for it
well you could use them in a 1000 point battle, but don't overdo it, go for a unit of max 15, and support it with SM or WL for kills
In 1k games, I often see PGs overshadowed by Spearelves. Considering you can get almost twice as many, have the same 5+ save, and 3x the number of attacks, I have to go with Spearelves for an anvils.
In larger games yes, they make good infantry anvils at 19-24+Korhil and maybe even a BSB, but really- who uses infantry?! haha.
oh and uh, for old time's sake:
