25 points for something that has a relatively small chance of affecting one roll? I've seen some people put it on their blademaster in a swordmasters unit, and that seems like a great idea, but I'm just not really sure if it'd be worth it. What armies is this item good for? Anyone have any thoughts on it in general?
The +1 is certainly helpful. With our smaller, elite army, we're likely going to finish deploying first, which will give us an additional +1 for the roll for first turn. A +2 means that we'll almost always get our chance at going first. Without much armor, getting time to find cover, or a headstart on our way across the field is a godsend.
Of course, it is a use of points, and often competes with the Dragon Horn. I take it as a second line item. It always goes into my list, but at the end, if I could spend those points elsewhere, its one of the first items to be cut.
I don't it often, but I often include it in lists that I am confident will have less units to plase than my opponent, lots of scouts and warmachines. That way I get plus 2.
Often in spite of being a small elite army my unit count is close to my opponents (even though the model count is way down), a couple of eagles and units of 7 swordmasters and you quickly have as many units as your opponent.
I wouldn't bother if I wasn't confident of already having the +1 for finishing first, I put it in last as for 25 points I can always buy more troops if I think that I don't need it.
I think its worth it with certain builds...like if you load up on bolt throwers, first turn could make a massive difference. Wipe out your enemies faster units before they even have a chance to get to you.
Hmm, I might give it a shot and just see how it feels. I definitely have a small-unit army so I usually get the +1 anyway, so +2 might be kinda nice. Thanks for the thoughts guys.
I dont think of it as a must have item in my armies. my opponent usually outnumbers me which gives me the +1 on my roll anyways. When taking the skeinsliver I for the most part find myself either rolling far higher than my opponent or rolling way too low for the +1 to matter. If I have the spare points available ill throw it on my PG champ.
As an update, I've tried running the Skeinsilver. In the first game I played with it, I tied the first two rolls to go first WITH the +2 and won it on the third roll. In the second game I tied it once with the +2 and then won it on the second. Really, really, really love this item now.
yeh, every game i've taken the skiensliver i've got 1st turn (yay for small elite armys) so i think its well worth the points
I used it once to make sure I get the 1st turn, because I was trying to have a 1st turn cavalry charge on an Empire warmachines hill.
so I used a couple shadow mages with Unseen Lurker and Steed of Shadows. a unit of 6x DP's, and a noble in shadow armor.
the Noble comes out of the woods and a mage flies him straight into the hill. or another mage casts Lurker on the DPs and I have a 1st turn charge.
was fun if nothing else ^^ and it actually worked!
