This is the start of a new series, that will hopefully bring new ideas and tactics to the forums. Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
This week's topic is - White Lions of Charace
Is the command worth it? What do you give the champion, and do you take a magic banner? What is the best unit size? Which character do you think benefits from being in the unit the most?
White Lions = Ownage.
How many do you take?
Any particular upgrades?
Hero/Lord that works nicely with them?
Your post was about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in a diabetic's house without a chimney
The White Lions are the best knigh... eh, can openers we have at our disposal. Combined with Stubborn on LD 9, the "move through forest" rule and the fact that they have a 3+ save (I think) against shooting, they for a tremendously hard battle line for your enemy to break.
The number of attacks aren't very impressive, so a champion is mandatory (unless you use them as flankers). If used in the main battle line, you should have enough models for a rank bonus and a banner for extra combat res. The unit won't break, so it's safe to have a banner in there.
I have never taken a magic banner in the unit as I tend to put the Banner of Sorcery in a PG unit.
The champion is a perfect candidate for the Amulet of light to deal with ethereal and forest spirits.
5000p. High Elves
I give them full command as well. Unit size varies from 15-20
as for a character that works well with them :
w/ Great Weapon, Amulet of Light ( he and unit attacks are magical ... cheap and worth it )
w/ Armour of Caledor, Helm of Fortune ( armour gives a 2+ save which the helm cant improve unfortunately but he can re roll failed saves )
w/ Sacred Incense ( shooting at him and his unit is at -1 to hit )
there you go. I made a quick combo for the prince since i dont play high elves ( i play warriors of chaos/bretonnians and abit of wood elves and just started some beastmen )
Caradryan is also a good choice to go with them. With a unit of 20, full command, banner of your choice, caradryan you'll be breaking foes left and right, with mr3 and a 3+ vs shooting, and fear.
For a long time these have been my favourite of our elite infantry units.
They are very fragile in combat and do struggle to wrack up lots of kills, so if you are using them to break enemy without flankers then you will need ranks and banners etc.
I think an effective line unit of them is from 18 up, (frontage of 6) I normally put in a BSB (mounted with Temakador's Gauntlets or on foot with Armour of Caledor and Gaurdian Phoenix).
This is not the only way to take them however and I think that they are possibly the best gaurd unit we have. A small unit of 6 or 7 with a champion hanging out near or with a mage can move through a forest to keep the mage safe and is scary enough to keep away most hunters with 7 or 8 ASF S6 attacks.
Finally they can be used as Flankers in units of 6 or 7 again with the champion, here I think that Swordmasters are better.
As you can see I always take a champion, why, I avoid it when indepentdant characters can overkill a champion with a balesword and crush the unit with only doing 1 wound(multiplied to 6). However as the WL are stubborn combat res isn't an issue so all that matters is keeping the Lions in the fight, hence a challenge is normally good, (unit of 7 in challenge bale sword multiplies 4 wounds to 15 you lose by 6 aren't outnumbered so test on Stubborn 8, unit of 7 out of challenge does 4 wounds kills 4 guys now outnumber so need snake-eyes)
So in summary
Good banners- Lion Standard or Standard of Balance
Good equipment- almost anything that isn't a magic weapon (even armour to, with luck, keep you alive in a challenge)
Command- Always a champion, Banners and Musicians when they aren't flankers
Size- Minimum of 18 to break an enemy alone (with a combat character) any size to flank but around 7 or 8 is probably max.
Even against a 2+ armor save, Swordmasters are better can openers. That being said, Stubborn is pretty nice. If you're looking for a hard hitting unit, go with Swordmasters. If you want a bigger rank and file that hits harder than PGs and won't break, White Lions are the way to go.
This thread is very helpful for us players that are still on the sidelines for elite HE infantry, and a question for realitycheque- can I use that insult for my sig? I cant stop laughing
