So I just got a box of shadow warriors, and I don't know if they'll even be effective, but i'm hoping to use them as a war machine hunter unit, so how do you deploy them, as skirmishers? As scouts? If so, how do you deploy terrain to give them the best chance to get to those nasty cannons and such?
Thanks to the greatest people in LO!
They must skirmish, and if terrain allows then getting them as close to the enemy warmachines as possible.
Ideally you want to be out of sight and within 15" of your intended target, then you can walk shoot then charge. This is not often possible and I normally try to get into enemy deployment zones so shooting units have to turn to face them for an additional -1 to hit in addition to the -1 for skirmishers. Then use them to march block as well as attacking warmachines or other shooting units (only from a flank).
I think their shooting is a bit of a waste of time.
So you use them as a combat unit that can get into the rear easily? Sounds simple enough.
I think Shadow Warriors are situational. They are worth more than their points when you are maximizing bolt throwers and archery so you can take advantage of march blocking potential early on, especially if you don't use eagles. This is their primary purpose in my opinion. Slowing a flank can be drastic to many lists.
Taking out artillery and ranged units is a bonus to that, but requires more finesse. The 15 inch scout rule is harder to apply as their artillery will be behind their close combat units and if they have skirmishers or fast cav it makes placing harder. Even the artillery units see 360*. To increase your chances of getting an ideal scout placement place your LOS blocking terrain on their table end and a little under 15" from a hill (if they place one as a obvious gunline holder). It's not uncommon for players to put their artillery in a forest end which is ideal for what you want because it often allows you to place your scouts in open site behind them.
Make sure you don't just focus on where you put your terrain, but where they put theirs.
So you get the bonus but don't negate their ranks. I thought that you didn't get either as a skirmisher thanks.
Ahh, ok, many thanks, I was thinking that even if they killed a single great cannon they would make thier points back, if im fielding 5, thanks again
