Is Tyrion Worth The Points?
I mean, i'm in love with the model and all that jazz, and on paper he sounds rather hefty, but has anyone actually played with him and done well?
Some decent Stories is the tiny push i need to make my mind up =]
I run him with a unit of Princes and it's my most powerful unit - as you can guess.
But I suck at this game, so this doesn't mean he's better than other options. I like him though.
Tyrion is really hard to kill and has great fluff. Str seven hits that will probably always strike first and twenty inch movement - awesome. He has a 0+ armour save and immune to fire based attacks so will always get regenerate and a 4+ ward save. Magic resistance tops it off. On the bad side he only has four attacks and toughness of three so not a good idea sending him into blocks of troops without support. I would love to use him in games but would get moaned about for being cheesy like when i used his brother Teclis.
I usually run him by himself, but I'll always have a couple fast combat units in any list that he's in. Best thing to do with him for a couple turns is pick off warmachines, chariots ect, and once other stuff starts getting into combat, get some flank charges off with him. When he is alone, he is almost unkillable, also he will go toe to toe with any lord/hero in the game and most of the time come out on top. Do a few dice hammers to see how often something will wound him to shooting, I once did a test with 100 str 3 shots from a BS3 unit, and he took 1 wound lol.
Cheesy? They are in the book, not like your using un-tested characters such as Thyrus Gorman (Empire Fire Wizard) or Karl Franz's old 'all stats 10 for 1 round' rules. My mates use Dwarf King Grudgebearer, White Dwarf w/ Bugman & Gotrek, Archaon, etc.
I think it makes the game a little more fun to use such renown heroes in your army from time to time at least. I use Valten III sometimes XD and Teclis.
Havnt tested Tyrion in actual combat though (dont have model and dont proxy) but would like to purchase to test and use. Especially since the 'opponents permission for special characters' no longer applies to book characters, make use of it imo.

I once heard Tyrion described by other players as "the only model able to go toe to toe with Chaos heroes and win." I don't know about that (I still haven't fought chaos, and I don't have a model for Tyrion,) but my take on Tyrion is that he looks so good on paper that it's silly for anyone who has the model not to try him out.
Tyrion is good (incidentally he is going to get seriously nerfed by 8th edition as his 4+ ward save gets equalled by his 4+ Regeneration).
His main weaknesses would be being autobreaked by a fear causing enemy. So he really should have some support. Luckily Dragon Princes are fairly awesome anyway. Five or 6 of those with the Lion Standard led by Tyrion for example will munch through most things.
The other problem is that he 'only' has four attacks which means he can't really finish off the big stuff in one round of combat. I have never had a chance to use the breath attack he has but I would imagine it would come as a nasty surprise.
On the plus side he is probably point for point one of the hardest characters in the game to kill.
The single save rule is just a rumor, and I don't think it's too likely to happen. I hope.
I think tyrion is a great choice. He's relativly low on points cost for what you're getting and dominates. I havn't tried it yet but I'm going to put him in a unit of ten Silver helms with 5 dragon princes to roaming around if I need a flank charge, and just see how it works out.
