I have two main armies (I have a small greenskin army that Ive been raiding recently for bitz)- a High Elf and "Man" army (Brettonians with some Empire mixed in)... the problem is I havent used point values for years and I cant even find my older characters in the newer armybooks to find their real values. So Im basically asking if these armies sound mostly balanced.
Elves- Lord on Star Dragon
Mage on Wyvern
Lion Chariot of Chrace
Maiden Guard *7 and mage queen?
Phoenix Guard w command *15
special character hero/lord? *2
Men- warhorse cavalry *12
Elector count of Ostland
empire cannon, helblaster canon and stone thrower
halberds with command *5
spears w command *10
custom warboar chariot w three archer crew
three heroes one army standard
Oh I forgot the elves have a princess on a unicorn and two dragon princes as well Does this sound balnced. Thanks
sorry for the double post but Im going to GW tonight so if the balance is off, who should I buy tonight. we are gonna play on Saturday so I want things even as possible.
In 7th edition wyvern is only for orcs, and unicorns are for wood elves.
There are also no maiden guards.
If you are going to play elves, you could make use of some repeater bolt throwers, and perhaps some swordmasters/white lions.
It looks to me like you aren't exactly planning on playing by conventional rules, so there will be a little bit of confusion, I think. You can't go by point values when you're mixing armies, because point values are determined by the context of one army, not by context of all the armies.
As it is though, by the rules the way I know them, the men will get eaten alive. Bulk up the spear unit, and the halberd unit, throw in some handgunners (or archers if guns don't fit the army you're trying to build.) and I think the balance will be a little better. I don't know for certain, though, because there is no way I can tell what kind of rules you're using. My advice would be to just trust your instincts. You'll know what is balanced because it will be fun to play.
I play with older rules, not sure on the edition, but magic comes last after everything, and magic uses winds of magic cards with dispel cards and stuff and none of these lores and dispel dice stuff I always hear about now. I bought most of this stuff back in the nineties. Ssince I play with friends, we dont worry about core units, percentages, etc, just field the whole army and go.
So the maiden guard doesnt exist anymore. I remeber them being a pretty special unit when I bought them. My other two heroes I cant find anymore either. When they make new models, do they pretend the old ones dont exist and expect us to throw them out every year and buy new models and armybooks? Maybe Ill buy some pistoliers tonight, the only man archhers left are in the chariot.
I do realize I have alot of custom models such ass unicorn and wyvern but since it had no front hands I couldnt call it a dragon. There isnt exactly an official warboar chariot either, but its all getting fielded. With excepton of the points and loose army lists, all other rules are adhered to, at least the rules and battlebook I go by
The warboar chariot is an Orc and Goblin option, if you want more recent stats. Pistoliers are a very solid option for the men, and they'll work together well with your knights. After you add them, I can't speak too much for balance, because current edition's magic is the one thing I know best.
And yes, there are a lot of old models that are abandoned in new editions. It doesn't happen all at once, they just add models that have the same rules and as the models change the rules change. I'm sure there is an iteration of the maidenguard in a current edition, they just changed so much you recognize them. That's how they make money. If they kept the game stagnant then the only money they would get would be from the people who joined the game and weren't able to find a second hand army they liked. No company can survive that.
Anyways, I wish you luck. You'll hear a lot of naysaying about not following the current rules, but the point is that you're obviously enjoying yourself. If I was ever disappointed in a new edition of the rules (which may yet happen) I would probably just keep playing an old edition with my friends as well.
Ya I dont play with other gamers for the reason that people are too strict with army lists.... "Elves cant ride wyverns, blah blah blah", but since I spent thousands of dollars on all this stuff, I field the armies as I see fit. Plus, I would fight a two thousand point army with a thousand point army and consider it the true test of my generalship, which is why I stopped worrying about point values a long time ago... with my friends its man up and play.
Ya, I just spent 170 at GW twenty minutes ago on battleboard paint kit, supplies and twenty state handgunners. We will find out how the balance is on Saturday. Thanks for all the advice guys
I just added four dragon princes... and I got seventh ed rulebook and new empire and high elves book. I actually kind of like the way magic is now with dice instead of power cards. I have all the power cards still, but some of the magic decks got lost and I only have the full decks for high magic and battle magic... so I guess Im switching to the new magic lores and power dice method. Thanks again
Edit: The bretonnians lost their heads for empire heads, unicorn turned back into steed and a couple other little tweaks and I have a proper elves and empiire setup now, and Ive assigned the proper points values as per armybooks . Thanks again guys
