So, what are you're thoughts about Phoenix Guard? A 4+ ward save, they hit at strength 4, and have (IMO) some awesome fluff. What do you use them for, if you use them at all?
I just use them all the time. I think I've only kept from using them once, and that was in a quick 500 point game. I love their models, and I love, love, love, love, love their fluff. I loved it so much that my first story in the fluffwars was based entirely around them.
Gamewise, I love their stats too. They don't have a great strength when compared to other units with great weapons or lances, but along with their weapon skill of 5 I find them to be pretty reliable in close combat. Their ward save means that they can take the things that would smash other units, so I try to make them the center of attention. I generally send them straight up the field to act as an anvil, usually escorting a wizard so that I can get him safely within range of the enemy (You can pop him out of the unit before things get up close and personal, but I tend to leave him in if he has some good buffs.) I pair them with some type of hammer unit (I like swordmasters, but if I'm unable to find nearby cover for them I instead pair the phoenix guard with some heavy cavalry.)
Broadly speaking, I want them to be the center of combat, because I know they can take the heat where other units can't. If someone has to be flanked, I want it to be the phoenix guard and then I do my best to get some counter-flankers in there.
I'd suggest units of 20. I only have 15, but when I come into some money I'm definitely getting some more.
I use them to escort the Everqueen and her maiden guard into battle, and theyre damn good at their job. My fifteen block of PG ran the show on the weekend. They made two units run in fear, one off the table. Then they destroyed a unit of handgunners, took their banner, suffering ony one casualty all game. I won, PG became elite and my friend is terrified to have to face them again this weekend.
Of course I have to mention my dice were on fire all game, lol

Awww man, I love my Phoenix Guard. I have to echo how much I love their fluff. Though I do alter their colors a bit, because I blow at painting lol. Personally I use them for pretty much three jobs. First, I use them as a back-up anvil. That is, if my spearmen fail. Second, I use them as a mage bunker. Though in 8th I'll probably stop doing it. Third, I use them to protect my RBTs. I plays Dwarfs and TKs a lot, so I have to worry about miners and other such surprise jerks.
"It is only the great men who are truly obscene. If they had not dared to be obscene, they could never have dared to be great."
And, with the new Rules, Magic resistance doesnt provide extra dice for dispelling. it gives you a ward or improves your "current" ward. so stick caradryan into them and hey presto: a 1+ ward against spells =]
