I was struck with the idea of using a large unit of Reavers, maybe 10 models or so. A fast cav unit that can survive a round or two of shooting, enough bows to be more then a nuisance, and with the spears still be capable of dishing out some hurt if they are required to slam into a unit solo.
Has anyone ever tried using these guys as something more then just a 5 man unit?

Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
I tried this yesterday with a 10 model unit and would advise against it they got two rounds of shooting in which cut down a sizeable chunk of a chaos regiment but then they got charged (poor playing maybe as a should have feigned a retreat) and within 2 turns they had been destroyed.
However I think if I had got 2 turns of shooting and then got the charge myself it may have been a different story...
Reavers aren't built for combat, and at ~20pts a model, I'm not too keen on only getting 10 bowshots on the move. For the same, you can pick up 10 archers, sit in the safety of your DZ, and fire off as many volleys as you can.
They shouldn't be going into combat at all, either. For my Warriors, my Fast Cav have 2A each with Flails at S5, a 5+ save, and do a great job of hacking apart enemy characters in the first round. But for our Elves... our cavalry has no armor, and Spears only work on the charge. With Step-Up already causing us headaches across the entire army, Ellyrians are only suffering more for their lack of protection and swinging power.
This has led me to seek the same effects (early missile harassment followed with possible supportive charges) from regiments of Shadow Warriors. Skirmish actually makes them as resistant or more resistant to shooting than our Ellyrians, and with their opportunities to deploy directly into cover, their shorter movement is less problematic. Furthermore, they hit just as hard as Ellyrians (2, S3 attacks), and Hatred gives them an edge against all enemies, regardless of Initiative. Finally, we are able to join them with 2 characters and maintain all of their special rules- Alith Anar, and any Prince or Noble who wears the Shadow Armor.
I personally wouldn't consider taking Reavers in anything larger then 5 models. Most other armies have fast cav that do exactly the same thing as our Reavers and something extra for about the same points, WoC as mentioned above by the good captain can do what they do for 22 pts a model and DE dark riders have repeater Crossbows for 22 as well. The only upgrade we get is a spear.......
If you would like some "bang for your buck" protecting your flanks, I would suggest either a 10 man unit of helms (full command would set you back 270 pts) or as further mentioned by the captain in the "Kitty Kart" thread, 2x Tiranoc Chariots (170 pts) on each flank. I tried these over the weekend in a 2500 pt game and they worked wonders.
