with the new edition, i liked to field an high elf army. i've already got some models, not enough, but i can't seem to make a nice army. every time i try to make a list, it just doesn't seem very competitive if it's done. can anyone help me build a nice army list for my HE.
oh, the only thing that i finished and looked like fun was an all chariot/archer army, with 2 bolt throwers and a dragon. but since there is something called steadfast, i don't think it'll do much. anyway, if you can convince that such an army is competitive, i might give it a shot.
i hope someone can help me, thanks
well, that would be an alright army except for the archers part- yeah archers got better, but high elf archers are crap (for their cost) a dragon is amazing, however with the new percentage rules, I wouldn't know hwther or not you woul dbe able to field it in the "typical" point sized game, but stay posted on that (if you can take it- then do, star dragons are beastly- breath attack are better, terror is worse, but thunderstomp owns so much). Bolt throwers are always a must, nothing thins ranks better or snipes the enemies beasties for us, unless maybe magic? but thats going away from your theme. Ellyrian reavers are our cheapest cavalry, although can they break ranks? cause they're fast cav, I think they don't... Chariots are in my opinion nerfed, I used to be able to charge in with my white lion chariot and overrun. Now I charge in and get killed- due to the insane amount of return attacks (but then again this was against ogres). But yeah- archers definetely not, bolt throwers, definetely yes and dragon maybe, hope this helps,
ok what do you think if i use this kind of a list
prince, stardragon, DA, Eshield, vambracers of DEF, spear
dragon mage, lv2, guardian phoenix, silverwand
4x 10 archers, 1x 16 archers plus banner
3 lion chariots and 2 tyrannoc chariots
1 great eagle
i cant get rid of the archers, or ill have to field spearmen or lothern seaguard, which will take away the speed in the army. can this army win normal 2500 points games or will it totally lose??
In my opinion you do need a few solid regiments (swordmasters?) as if your chariots get held up they will get cut to shreds and leave your archers very vunerable
If you can go magic heavy and use Death you can sap the opponent's leadership value and then Steadfast won't really matter as long as you win teh combats - the enemy will in all likelihood run anyways.
However, a good core would be 30 spears or 2 units of 20 archers - High Elf archers aren't all that bad as witH ASF that is 20 (S3) stand and shoots AND 20 (S3) attacks when the opponent charges you... both will be hitting on 4s against WS4,5,6,7 etc opponents, 4s and 3s against WS3 or lower.
All told, 40 attacks, after having been peppering the enemy from 30 inches out, is a very nasty proposition. You are looking at a unit which, in a typical battle, will be shooting at least 60 shots before being charged, probably 80 including the stand and shoot reaction, and then the 20 ASF attacks. Most of those shots are on 4s.
Even a Chaos warriors unit would balk under this sort of firepower before eating up the unit.
80 shots hitting on 4s = 40. At 5s = 13.333 and failing on 3s = 4.4 Chaos warriors deaded assuming shields.
Then 20 attacks ASF rerolling misses = 1.7
So 20 archers can kill 6 Chaos warriors before suffering any hits back, assuming no magical augmentation or anything else. In practice the averages get better - 20 or more of those shots could be under half range for example.
If the CW don't have shields - then you are looking at killing 9 - thats no mean feat against a heavily armoured foe with T4 - with only shy of 250 pts of archers.

ok, i think the archers aren't that bad, but after reading this and having a good look at the new mini's, i came up with this list today.
prince, armour of caledor, vambracers of defence, great weapon
noble, bsb, dragon armour, enchanted shield, sword of might
30 spearmen, full command, warbanner
18 white lions, full command
18 phoenix guard, full command
10 swordmasters, full command
10 swordmasters, full command
2 great eagles
i think it's more competitive than the archer/chariot list, even though this has not a dragon in it. what do you think?
what happened to the mobility aspect?
I like the unit of spearmen, that looks solid, but nothings going to move particularly quickly, however the lion chariots could support your infantry very well. You dont have much magic, or "good" shooting, combinging the two would be good, I don't see the point of the phoenix guard in that sized unit, also white lions seem less than essential. Drop them for bolt throwers, in my opinion or a decent mage or two. Right now your army is going to get out maneuvred- lack of cavalry (not definetely- but watch your flanks) out shot (s3 is less than great)
you guys are helping me out here, thanks. because i can see a very good list now (i think).
i've tried to throw in all the things i want and also the things i've been adviced. that means i'm going to field a lot of chariots, not a dragon, and some other cool stuff, i'll show you
prince, armour of caledor, vambracers of defence ( 2+ re roll save, 4+ ward, 4A S6)
mage, lv2, annulian crystal ( +1 DD, and -1 PD )
30 lothern seaguard, shields, full command
17 phoenix guard, f.c. (prince goes here)
10 sword masters, f.c. (f.c. because they can't be bought without banner)
10 sword masters, f.c. (same story)
this list is 2487 points. i don't know which lore to choose for my mage, i like lore of life, T5(7) elves are awesome. though lore of beasts, with wyssans wild form on the phoenix guard seems good too. so, can anyone help me out there please. otherwise, do you think this is an improvement on the list, or is it worsening it.
As for the magic it depends on what you want it to do. Support / keep alive is life or beasts. If you want to kill though shadow and death are very good. Shadow can give you strength 9 infantry with mind razor as well as lower enemy toughness/strength/weapon skill. Death kills heroes and can own with purple sun and gives dice back the more you kill with it.
