I've been playing Warhammer for about 3 months now & have been doing pretty good with a "Tilean" themed Empire Army. However I have been thinking of starting a second army that is greatly different in play styles, mainly one that doesn't require 120+ infantry to paint lol. But I mean a more "elite" army. I was thinking of Brets, WoC, or Wood Elves, but I love the story behind the Phoenix Guard and High Elves would be the perfect army to face my girl's Dark Elf army with.
I was thinking of an army with an Archmage, Caradryan, Korhil, BSB, Lv 2, Eagles, Phoenix Guard, Swordmasters, and Sea Guard. Would an army like this work? Can you tell me any more about these units? Am I leaving anything necessary out? Do Dragons still work? I was thinking around 2000pts. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.
This should have been posted in the special post for beginners, but anyway. I'm fairly new to High Elves myself (having converted from worshiping the Chaos Gods), but here's my two cents worth. Love Caradryan, and cheap hero that is good for a start and if he does die has a good chance of killing the guy that killed him, i'd use him as a 'suicide bomber' charge him into combat challenge their biggest guy and let him die. It would be easier to get an idea about your army if you had numbers up. To get the minimum core requirements for a 2000 point list you would need about 45 seaguard.... if thats what you want then, ok, fine.
You have no cavalry. High Elves have the fastest cav out there and it would be a shame not to take advantage of that. Our problem is that elves are fragile, so we don't want war machines/archers plugging away at us as we cross the board. Your army list is pretty much just foot soldiers so they would have to brave whatever is shot at them to cross the board. Some Reavers using the vanguard move could cross the board quickly and harrass war machines/enemies flanks with their bows on turn one.
Chariots, chariots, chariots. I love them. Although i have a horrible tendancy to roll a 1 for impact hits, but a chariot in the flank of a unit stuck in combat with your other guys would certainly ruin their day. Most of my opponents have underestimated the distance a chariot can charge and have been suprised to see it charge half way across the board and smash into their units. Hey it can be a bit hit and miss depending on the dice, but at only 85 points for a horse chariot certainly worth it i feel.... I would consider putting korhil on a lion chariot, would be interested to know what other more experienced players think about that.... but i just like the idea of him charging across the table being pulled along by a couple of lions.
Otherwise BSB great idea, High Elves have high leadership and re-rolls are great. Phoenix Guard and Swordmasters I love.... odd to have Korhil and no white lions...but I like to base my army around a bit of fluff as well as what works so thats just niggling really.
Repeater Bolt Throwers are awesome - I highly recommend them. And your Hero selections come to more than 500 points (Korhil, Cara and a magic-itemless BSB comes to 425). I'd drop Korhil myself.
