I have just started collecting a High Elf army and will be doing my first 1000 point battle tomorrow. I only started fantasy about a week or so ago, and the rules are still fairly new to me and my friend, he will be fielding a Vampire Counts army led by Konrad Von Carstein and a Necromancer, and then the rest will be filled in with corpse carts, Zombies and grave guard.
My 1000 point army list so far consists of the following:
High Elf Mage
Level 2 wizard
Seerstaff of Saphery
10 High Elf Seaguard
16 High Elf Spearmen
Standard bearer with lion standard
16 High Elf Spearmen
10 Sword Masters of Hoeth
Bladelord with amulet of light
Standard bearer with razor standard
Any opinions on my list so far would be greatly appreciated, including advice on things to remove/add from the army or tips on playing against a vampire counts player
Dispel scrolls! lol
Also for 1k I wouldnt go with a lvl 2 mage, quite probably myself I would go for a prince, preferably mounted on something fast like a griffon and just use him to take out the vampire general quickly!
I would also maybe turn your spearmen into 1 unit as units of 16 are too small. You need ranks of 5 for rank bonus too remember.
Thanks for the advice, but my only problem with the prince is that i am capped at 250 points for a hero and lord choice which means upgrades would be remote
Also would it be better to go with Pheonix Guard instead of Swordmasters?
if I did this I was wondering if it would be a good idea to use caradryan as a hero choice?

It's 250 for lords, and another 250 for heroes - Wouldn't go for Caradryan though - the guy has it's uses, but those uses are to kill things bigger then anything that'll show up at 1k. Now Korhil on the other hand, is the WH:F equivalent of a laser guided missile, but generally a simple hero with dragon armor and great weapon will do the job quite well, if you're short on points.
Also, against VC there's little need to bring the pg - swordmasters die to shooting first and foremost, and he won't bring too much of that.
I'd go for something along the lines of:
Mage, Annulian crystal
Noble, Heavy armor, great weapon
19 Seaguard (mage goes here)
20 Seaguard (feel free to field those two as one big block)
9 Swordmaster (Noble goes here)
With a few points left for you to spend on banners, fancy stuff, or additional models (or a rbt if you have).
Definately go for swordmasters. Its only 25% for Lords AND Heroes, but to be honest I would take a noble or prince with dispel scrolls to choke the vampire. Remember if you take out the general the army will start to fall apart and will be easy pickings for your troops so there is no requirement for a mage. The idea with a fast mounted prince was to get to the general and kill him quickly.
Hope this makes some sense lol
Thanks everyone for all the great advice
But how is it possible to kill the vampire quickly, as he doesnt have to accept the challenges and can just hide behind his units
A vampire hiding inside a unit, with a mage, and an annulian crystal on your side, won't do terribly much imho.
inyour firts post you've given your mage 2 arcane items.. that's illegal.
so either the seerstaff, or the silver wand has to go.
