so i was wondering at 800p (schol league) whats better a unit of 15 phoenix guard a unit of 15 white lions or a unit of 10 white lions and a unit of 10 phoenix guard
it totally depends on the rest of your list, and what the purpose of the unit will be.
WL's Kill more, PG's Don't get killed

Personally I love phoenix guard and I would choose them just for the fluff. It really does depend, though. I have often chosen them over harder hitting units and regretted it as soon as I played and realized I didn't have a single unit that could rack up the kills.
On the other hand, in the context of the low, low point value, I would go with the phoenix guard. White Lions excel at bringing down the biggies, and you're not going to see many of those in an 800 point game.
PG have an incresed rate of survival; the 4+ ward save. the woodsmen don't have this!
Yeah In Smaller Points Phoenix Guard, You Dont Really Need The Hard Hitters In 800pts
I've never actually used PG in a game (yet!), so I always stick with the WL. The s6 attacks is amazing, and stubborn? Can't beat stubborn..
Didn't play my high elves in the new edition yet but i always used phoenix gaurd just because of the 4+ wardsave, halberts and the fear rule. Fear isn't very good anymore ...
Because the elite high elf units aren't really 'cheap' i like them to survive as much as possible so i prefer PG above WL.
i def recomend Wl, Ws5 S6 attacks with asf, will kill anything, not to mention stubborn and a 3+ As vs shooting, its all well and good for Pg being really tough, but that doesnt last, and they will die, they also can not take on any hard hitting units, and fear is not as good as it ue to be, so themz my thouhts
A block of 20 PG should easily overcome a Horde of Empire Halberdiers, due to rerolling to hits, 6+ AS and 4++ ward (which is to be expected given how much they cost...). The only issue is lack of stubborn, meaning you'd want to have a decent rank bonus. At least a 4++ save means that a unit of PG is far less efficient to be shooting at than say swordmasters or white lions.

The thing is, we're pretty much forced to take LsG with no one to compete for their points, since they're the only decent core we have - and they're also a pretty decent anvil unit, and at the same amount of points even killier against rank and file troops, then the Pg are. But the Pg compete for points with Lions and Swordmasters (which are what I'd recommend in a small game - S5 can take care of all the big and scary things coming your way, and two attacks make sure they cut down infantry like straw)
