Hey guys so i have been working on a HE build for fighting against lizardmen... specifically how to focus on taking down 2 Ancient Stegadons.
I have been slaughtered three times against these things with their stupid OP thing of the ancients which has some really killer abilities. So i was thinking that i could get some paired units of spears and some Sword master on one, and some white lions and phoenix guard on the other.
Basically i want in the second paring to use one of those unit as a one which can take the hits. I know phoenix guard get a 5+ ward or was it 4 i cant remember at the moment but its one of them. So they would be more likely to take wounds, but white lions are able to take casualties without fleeing as quickly. So thats a bit iffy at the moment.
Seeing as elves lack fast cav which would mean taking down unit from the rear so much easier i would use the dragon princes to hit from behind? Basically to get extra wounds on that stegadon.
For the spear elves i was thinking maybe to just use them as cannon fodder? Or have a uni of sea guard and make use of the short bows. I was thinking of dumping High Lore becuase its so under powered now its basically useless. But what other lore to go with? Fire or Metal? (i like the sound of using the Lore of Metal to the tunes of Iron Maiden )
So that about as far as i have gotten. What do you guys think?
A block of spears is cetainly useful for gettings ranks. You can get a unit of 25 spears to have 5 ranks which means a considerable rank bonus AND 20 attacks. The second thing is that you have ASF - you should be striking before the steg apart from impact hits.
Take the charge with an anvil unit. Spears because of the number of bodies they have are excellent, whilst Phoenix Guard are twice as expensive but you will only lose half as many to impact hits due to a 4+ ward save and S4 halberds ASF at such a high I value makes for an interestingly spiky proprosition for any units in the Lizzie army, not just a Stegadon. They also cause fear, so are only subject to fear of a Steg, not terror.
A flanking unit of White Lions or Swordmasters will then carve up the Stegadon. S6 attacks or 2x S5, its all much of a muchness, though as WHite Lions are STubborn it might help if you inexplicably lost a combat. Of course the alternative is just eat the Stegadon and any other units in the Lizzie army with your own brand of big beastie, a Star Dragon (but avoid Carnosaurs they are not good for Dragons to face down...)....

Bolt Throwers are always helpful as well. d3 wounds knock them down quick.

I agree with Djones9916, make sure you bring quite a few Eagle Claws and then shred them from afar. Might be useful to have a B-plan though, should the first one fail.
My project log: High Elves (and other stuff actually, but mainly High Elves).

Ancients usually have riders on them, so taking an Eagle Claw can be tough. If you have the opportunity to gun for the crew, or a rider, score wounds on him first.
Magic also helps. Last I checked, Stegadons really hate taking Initiative checks... (Teclis/Book of Hoeth, wink-wink, nudge)
We do have Fast Cavalry, although not very good Fast Cavalry, and it's difficult for even Fast Cav to get behind an enemy and rearcharge them, unless your opponent is very silly.
Shooting them with RBTs or the Reaver Bow can be excellent. If you're going for the hammer-and-anvil approach, go with the Phoenix Guard. Tossing Spears or LSG into the fight can cause you to lose, very rapidly. You spears will take a bludgeoning, and that will translate to CR for your foe. If you don't kill the Steg, you're taking a break check. No fun there really. Besides, Spears cost more than half a PG, and you'll literally lose half as many PG (no armor against the massive S6 hits, just a 4++).
Lizardmen are a nasty, nasty army. Lore of Life helps a lot though (kill Slann, regen Elves) as does Lore of Shadows (Initiative is the bane of the Lizard, and Okkams turns any Elf into a murderer).
I recently used lore of Shadows with Teclis against some vampire counts and I must say that Pit of Shades, Okkams Mindrazor and even Penumbral Pendulum are game changers against low initiative armies. If your against using Teclis that's fine (I'm still learning the game and just wanted to test him out and I must say he can be a beast) but the lore itself is great as I was taking huge chunks out of his units and then fairly effectively stopping from from raising many back up in his magic phase. I don't think the steggies have any trickery that can stop a pit of shades from getting them dragged to their DOOM! (so the spell says).
RBTs did seem effective against the crew of the stegadon. But i think the Hammer and Anvil approach would be good, in combination with some good magic before hand. Although WHite lions seem pretty brutal. Wounding most t4 things on 2s.
I havent come across the stegs in 8th ed yet, mainly been having ALOT of headaches with sally hunting packs......... Hammer and anvil would be my go, take a charge with the phoenix guard and send in a counter charge with Dragon Princes (always worked for me in 7th and in "theory" should still be quite effective in 8th, but I have not had to opportunity to try it myself) or White Lions in a 6x2 or 7x2 formation. I dont usually worry about any stegs until im in combat with them, there are more inportant things IMHO to kill in a lizardmen army (Slann, sallys)
