I know this may sound a bit much but I would like to explain why I believe in this idea. The first reason is the dragon would be there to protect your Archmage so you do not have to worry about half your army exploding and you can go close to the enemy without dying and blow them up yes you lose five hundred points but if he last three turns the damage of your mage and dragon will be there. I also placed the mage with the Seer staff so I can chose his spells which will help my spell casting. For 570 points you have a level four Mage which means for High elf +5 in discast rolls, the Seerstaff who lets you chose your spells in lore of Shadow which means weaken the enemy then the Dragon to protect your mage use breath attack to make damage and you do not need to worry about your mage dying quickly in melee. For 95 points more then Teclis you have a mage that can survive.
Except your mage can still be targetted in melee, and T3 with no saves, doesn't really matter if you get to lower their str (I'd be saving a dispel scroll just for that anyways).
Mages should not be on dragons period. Not if your building a serious list. Having fun, knock yourself out, but not if your being rough and tough.

The reason I placed the mage on a dragon is cause I want 2 mages in my army and apparently you must have a lvl 4 and I like to have a dragon.
As much as it can be cool to try, I'm not sure dragons are worth their points. Everything ranged will try to blow it in pieces, warmachines included. You will waste protective magic on the dragon/yourself just to stay alive, ( i.e, Regen on Drg/mage instead of Swordmasters ) and you can count on enemy magic to try to kill it too. I think it' s lame, because I liked the ideas of hosting dragons in my army list. ( We have a wasted hero slot with the Dragon Mage... I think he ll cool, but you ll never find any in any army list out there. )
But, of course, nothing keeps you to still try it , and if you do, I hope it's gonna be effective , good luck !

i like the thought of puttin a mage on dragon but then it just makes it so much cheeper gettin a dragon mage instead.
if you want lvl 4 mage on moon dragon you should get silver wand instead of seerstaff, 5 spells and 4 spells you choose (it is like the same)
an army that seeks to fight without the protection of the eagle claws is clearly courageous or inept. either way, í wish no part in it - Eolaran Greyhawk, Seamaster.
