Been posting quite a bit recently but its only to help me narrow down on what the best option for my 1500pts both aesthetically, and effectively. To this end im drawn to the question titled which is should I go for Spearmen or Seaguard.
First thing is i dont like the way the current Spearmen look. For High Elves they dont nearly look smart/neat enough when ranked up, so either way i would like to use the Seaguard models as Spearmen (should i choose Spearmen).
However, the issue i have with taking Seaguard is that spearmen are significantly cheaper for the same stats, just the loss of a bow (not even a longbow) to take into account. For 2pts more per model i could take a unit of elite infantry instead of Seaguard.
Im looking in 1500pts to be running a unit of 15-20 Phoenix Guard, 12-14 Sword Masters, (possibly) 2 Tiranoc Chariots, a unit of Shadow Warriors, a Lvl 3 archmage, & bsb. Hopefully will have room for one or two more special/rare options (like RBT) after core but its core where im looking.
So if i choose Speamen would i need to take maybe some archers for a bit of ranged support, and is it worth Seaguard just for the sake of a bow on a spear unit? If i take Seaguard i dont think il will be taking more than 18 in the unit, and 24 for Spearmen, both units 6 wide.
Thanks for any help you guys can shine on the issue.

I personally like Seaguard, specially for games under 2.5k. They just fulfill the roles of both the archers and the spearelves. You would have to take 27 with shields and full command to meet your minimum but that's pretty good as you stick a char in that and you can run that block 7x4 which is a lot of arrows with volley, good stand and shoot, and awesome stabby goodness. I think one of the most underlooked qualities about seaguard is that they can force an opponent to charge them unlike the spearelves and nothing you would want happen to the archers.
For example if your spearelves where facing off against a block of clan rats, your opponent is probably not going to relish the idea of charging you and giving you extra attacks. So the option of simple not charging and waiting for a condition that favors them is a more viable option. Now replace that with seaguard and it looks a little worse for your opponent. If they don't take the charge you can just beat them with arrows, possible of 18 arrows with the above block is nothing to snuff at. if they do charge, not only are they going to be attacking what they didn't want to do with the spearelves but also receive more arrows thru a stand and shoot.

I see what you mean. it would save me from having to buy an archers unit at a cost or almost half again as if i was to field seagaurd by themselves, and would mean my force as a whole would work better as there would be no unit sat back by itself. It also means i dont need to worry to much about using RBT to support archers, so they are points i can put into chariots and Shadow Warriors.
Its just the size of the unit thats throwing me off going that way at the moment. 27 is quite alot to have in one unit in just 1500pts.
Thanks again, and please keep opinions coming.
