Hey guys, I was thinking of doing a Hoeth themed army, not sure if it's extremely competative but it would have a good feel to it and I bet it would be fun to play
The list would consist of loads of Swordmasters ( ofc ), converted dragonprinces using torso of SMs, and perhaps a couple of chariots. Lords and heroes a fair amount of close combat, but of course i would go for a strong magic phase.
Now what I'm wondering about is my core... I get the feeling that spearmen are those with the most "Hoeth-feel" to them but I'm not sure. Archers could perhaps be of good use by picking on enemy range troops to reduce fire at my SMs and DPs.
So what do you guys think? Would be happy to hear your thoughts on the army idea in general but also the core question
I run a Hoeth themed army.
My list includes:
Arch mage with book of hoeth (of couse) lore of life to protect sword masters
Mage with seerstaff of saphery, high lore with curse of arrow and flames of phoenix
bsb great weapon with Guardian phoenix and armour of caledor combo.
Big blocks of spearmen 2 units of 25 - 30 depending on points
small units of archers (not a good unit but think that any fortification would have them)
Loads of sword masters in units of 14 with fc (one with banner of sorcery)
loads of bolt throwers (again think that they would be defensive batteries on fortifications)
Great eagle (mages messengers)
Army works well but has problems against dwarf gun lines think you could use chariots and silverhelms as well.
I think Hoeth themed armies can be quite powerfu, though I have never tried a pure Hoeth army myself.
An Archmage is a must, a couple of support characters like another Mage and a BSB wouldn't go amiss either. For core, I would go with either Spearmen or Seaguard, but if you are REALLY fluffy, you should not include missile weapons, as I have read somewhere (probably the Mordheim rulebook), that the soldiers of Hoeth frown at missile weapons. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Archers alltogether.
Specials, SM of course, but your DP idea is great IMO, as long as they are converted properly. You could get away with PG as well I think. I'm not too fond of the Chariot idea, but if you like them, I won't stop you.
For rare choices, I think Eagles are your best bet, and as earlier stated, RBTs may be a bit unfluffy.
5000p. High Elves
An interesting idea! As for Core, I think Spearmen would go big in a Hoeth army. Archers would work also IMO, as any Spearman has served as Archer before taking up shield and spear. Specials SM and Silver Helms mainly, but I guess that Shadow Warriors would make some sense in there as well seeing how they do not have a homeland and wander where they are needed the most. Our rares would both do just fine in a Hoeth based army.
Hope it helps,
My project log: High Elves (and other stuff actually, but mainly High Elves).

Well, remember that the High Elves have a citizen levy- essentially, the majority of their army is formed of militia, like a National Guard. Even if your army is from Hoeth, they're going to have lots of Spearmen and Archers, in fact, they probably would not have Seaguard present because they represent the only standing force in all of Ulthuan and are based at Lothern and other port cities.
Also- don't forget that you can call on warriors from other provinces. Just because your army comes from Hoeth doesn't mean that Phoenix Guard, Dragon Princes, or Elyrian Reavers may have marched to your aid. For example- even the Dragon Mages study at Hoeth, and they are typically of Caledorian descent, so perhaps your Dragon Princes are present simply because they've come to protect a family member.
A Hoeth themed army would probably have lots of Spearmen and Archers, and more Swordmasters than any other Special choice. But that's not to say that you have to limit your choices because your army only represents Hoeth. Moreso than some other provinces, Hoeth is reasonably far inland, enough that any enemy invasion force would be sighted and there would be time to rally a considerable army from across Ulthuan to meet it.
Thanks for all the replys guys, faster and more than i expected!
I'm hearing you all, and i think i'll do it straight up arrow-free, with two units of spearmen as core.
As I'd like to cut down my options to keep it as "Hoethy" as possible i think i'll stick with just SMs and the SM converted DPs (who'll just be mounted swordmasters) as special.
Not to sure if i want to include any rare at all, a couple of eagles if anything, since i think they haven't really got that disciplined swordmaster feel to them. But then again, they propably would be really useful in battles.
As for heroes, archmage of course, and a back up mage and BSB feels like a must. One thing i'd really like to try is a type of swordmaster hero (just IoB champion will work) on chariot strictly for fun. Potion of Strength, Blade of Leaping gold and some defence i bet would be enjoyable to play
Well thanks again guys for input, i'll get this project going and perhaps start a log if i feel like the progress is worth mentioning :p
If you got any other thoughts on my army, Hoeth fluff or any tips remotely concerning this let me hear it
