Was sitting in class today day dreaming of battlefields and a world of warhammer and came up with a weird but interesting thought about an Archmage.
Run him as such:
Archmage (Lore of Life)
Talisman of Protection
The thought is to fly around and supporting the main battle line with spells and dragon-ness, the Lore of Life on him and 5 spells means you have the full diversity of the lore and the movement to get where he is needed, his protection against non-magical atttacks leaves him safe while his dragon tears into units. Should the dragon take damage he can cast spells and heal his wounded mount, also the boon of a 5+ regen (or 4+ with throne) on a monster is pretty cool.
I know this isn't exactly the most competitive choice but I wanted to get the opinions of the LO members.
I think the robes are model on foot only. If it were legal it would be potentially very nasty.
I still cant co e up with an effective AM on a dragon. it just doesn't seem to work well.
It should be fun to bring to the table, and having 5 lore of life spells is really what can make it work. People need to kill the dragon in a single turn, lest it will get its wounds back pretty much without any additional effort during your magic phase.
The downsides of course is that you could get like a 20-man White Lion unit to go with the mage instead... and you will need to play a large enough game just in order to use it.
But I think it is an interesting choice. People say monsters are worthless now because war machines are better... but really, I think people overrate how dangerous they are. A suitable complement though if you want to protect your dragon from them is perhaps taking 4 eagles to swarm in and take out the war machines.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Monsters in general aren't worthless - just look at the Hydras, Stegadon, the Sphinxes or the stuff Ogres bring now. Our monsters on the other hand, *are* worthless. For a simple reason - they need to be ridden by a character. And our characters, even decked out for defensiveness, do not belong into close combat - even our fighty lords and heroes are incredibly squishy considering their price. And carrying an archmage (that can't have that item loadout btw) into closecombat, just means giving the mage away, and potentially crippling your dragon. (And that's the point - A cleverly maneuvered monster can get past cannonfire, and even shrug off a hit or two. But as soon as being hit once, has a 50% chance of killing your 360 pt Archmage...)
As nice as they look on the board - until they allow dragons to be taken as rare choices, they're just not very good.

Ah thats what I get for not checking the book before I post haha, thanks for picking up on that Robe issue.
