i have an idea to feild a 40-man LSG unit and give them my BSB with razor standard. does this mean that the unit as the armour piecing special rule on both shooting and melee attacks?
Unfortunately, no. The Armor Piercing special rule states that you don't get to apply it unless you're wielding a special weapon that has the rule (for example, a handgun or a pistol).
I think that you would get to apply it to both the ranged and close combat attacks, the banner says that you gain the special rule. I know that it doesn't stack, ie DE can't get -2 on their repeater cross bows but weapons that already have armour piercing is the only exception I know of.
You may be better to ask this question in the rules forum, they will give you a better answer with better reasons, it may already have been asked though so have a quick look first.
Off the top of my head the banner is more than 25 points so the BSB would have to carry it in a unit of Seaguard so I am not sure its the best use of him anyway.
Actually, Allonairre, the AP special rule states quite clearly that it only applies to close combat attacks unless a special weapon has the rule. As the special rule isn't acquired by the Bows (it's acquired by the Sea Guard), rules as written dictate that you don't get the -1 armor.
Fair enough, I guess the same thing applies to the lore of metal spell that gives the unit armour piercing.
The only reason that I thought it may have been otherwise is that I know of almost no cases off the top of my head where it isn't the weapon that grants armour piercing. There may be some monsters around where that is the case but I am not sure. Now that I think about it I can't think of any melee weapons that grant Armour piercing either although there are tonnes of ranged weapons that do.
