The Shadow King
Ozzy Trueborn (Strombole)
Mastermage Elthaa (Allonairre)
As promised here is the voting thread for the Winds of Magic painting competition. There are some really beautiful miniatures in here, you must have some awesome looking armies on the table. Also not much Blue, which makes for a nice change from the usual, anyway pictures
The Shadow King
Strombole with Ozzy Trueborn
Allonairre with Master mage Elthaa
Where I was given multiple different models I kept special characters and monsters for another comp, I never said only one entry per person but I am sure that someone will do a Teclis or Special Character competition at some stage so thought I would save those up for then.
Thanks again for all the entries, its going to make voting extremely difficult.
While I am no expert at photography PM me if you want any advice on how to improve your photo's to show the mini's to their best advantage without spending a fortune on lightboxes and DSLR cameras etc.
I'm really liking Viktor's or Shadow King's right now. Shadow King because it looks the most 'finished' out of all of them. The photo isn't the best (my photo has got to the be the worst, Allonaire got all pushy, lol), but I can see that there are little 'magical swirls' in the gem on the horse's head. I also like the freehand on the cape, although you could have used the Elf runes from the book for more points.
Viktor's has a really nice pallet going, with some good warm colors and solid shading. Everything came off looking really clean, which I'm used to from Viktor's stuff in the WoC competitions. The gems are also really nice (in fact, everybody got the gems down surprisingly well) The only complaint that I have with Viktor's are the solid black cuffs, and the lack of any basing (call me a hypocrite).
I've got to give the edge to Shadow King by a nose. Runner up, Viktor, then the Bole/Ozzy collab, then myself. Allonaire, I'm not voting for you, you started this whole thing! But if you want to give some pointers on photography, a tutorial thread somewhere in the general areas might not be a bad idea. I know I usually take half-decent pictures, but I took this one on a bare counter under terrible lights just to get it done, and it came out a bit blue, which was weird. The photo overall is dark, but my colorscheme is also pretty dark and muted for High Elves.
Actually its the model who is named Ozzy Trueborn because he is rocking the devil horns salute, lol. Sorry if I confused anybody, lol. It wasn't two guys painting it, lol. Anyway, great work all around. I voted for shadow king but it was very tough and it just came down to having to vote for someone and it has a really nice base to go with a really nice model. That is not to say the others are not great models. Sarathai's model reminded me of the wraith in Stargate:Atlantis. Does the skin have that blue tint or was that just from the camera lighting? If it is the real colour, what colours did you use? Viktor's looks great, Allonaire's looks great as well. As I said, it was a very tough decision and really just came down to the wonderful basing job done by shadow king.
The models look great guys and I can't wait to see the next batch of models.
Also to Allonaire... I don't care how many mages I already have, I have to get that model!I am 2 seconds away from hitting the GW website to find that model. That's one cool Elf.

Nah, he doesn't have a blue tint, he's a regular elf. If anything, he's got more of a reddish skin tone. My army is from Caledor, so I wanted all of the wizards to be fire-themed and have red hair like Dragon Mages. The rest of the army has the traditional brown/blonde hair color. I should've put a piece of white paper behind him, the countertop is a bit grey and there's a window behind him - it just snowed here, so the sky is super blue and everything is reflecting it right into the house, so that's probably where the hue came from. That, and my camera tends to wash everything out.
Ya I figured it had to be from the lighting. Its looks really good, despite the quality of the pic. Its almost too bad it wasn't that blue so I could get that colour combo down, lol. Have you watched Stargate: Atlantis before? That is a dead ringer for wraith skin tone, lol. While my army isn't totally a Caledor army, I do have 2 Dragons and Dragon princes, so I'm with you on the pointy ears from Caledor
It really is hard to take good pics of these things with the proper lighting and colour temperature to show how the model really looks. For me, my problem is usually that the thing I am actually trying to take the pic of looks blurry or washed out with light while the models behind it come out perfect. Its soo frustrating at times, lol.
Regardless, great work from all involved.
NOW FOR FOOTBALL!!!!!! Giants and New England in the Superbowl IMO.

If your background is in focus but not the model, move the camera back a bit and zoom in, and adjust your focus if you can. The problem my camera has is that the focus isn't fine enough to pick up the model - it always looks for something larger. I even turned off the auto-focus and told it to focus on the center of the screen.
If you want that blue color, I have a recipe that would probably work for you - I use it on my unhelmeted Warriors. Start off with Elf Flesh over a white basecoat, then just ink it down with Ice Blue, and a final wash of Ultramarines Blue and/or Lich Purple to pick up the recesses.
And you go watch your Superbowl, stupid Giants fan... I was looking forward to seeing GreenBay back at it. Been a fan for 12 years, it was nice to be on top again.
I also voted for Shadowking basically because his was finished completely, nice base and everything.
Other than that
I really like the colours on Viktor's mage and the finish on the clothing, not so sure about the face, it looks good but its hard to see from the angle of the photo's.
Strombole you have cool colours, and no white which is cool, I like the face and love the hair, the robes look like you could have gone over the wash with your base colour just quickly and tidied them up a bit.
Captain's is quite cool, sorry I pushed you into rushing the photo, I know that the effect of the light isn't intentional I mucked around in photobucket trying to get the colour balance to what it should be but couldn't get it right so left it. In saying that I quite like the very muted blue effect that has occured, it gives the miniature a very cold and reserved appearance which I think suits a mage.
As for mine, there is always spray paint
The only advice about photo's that I would really give is the white paper background, rest the camera on something steady and use either 2 light sources or if weather suits natural light. My classroom at school is actually ideal, lots of natural light plus without the point light source from the sun relatively white flourescent tubes meaning that you minimise the heavy shadows and shiny reflections, I imagine that there are a few office spaces that are similar, maybe hmm perhaps not. The White paper enables a photo editor to figure out which colour is supposed to be white and so fix the colour balance as best as possible. My photo was taken before I figured out the school thing so a single point light source which causes all the shadows.
Thanks again for all the entries and great work all.
Allonaire is that red gore or blood red? What colours did you use to get that red? I'm painting a few elves right now and I am really digging your colour scheme.
Scab red, can do red gore in the shadows and little bit of blood red highlights if you want. If I were to do it again I would start from Dark Flesh, or perhaps that really dark brown Scorched I think.
Scab is definitely my favourite red though, Blood red is so bright and Red Gore just doesn't look right for some reason, I like the more purple of Scab red I guess.
They're all looking good. For Elves anyway. A few of them are hard to make out in the pics though and I really don't think the Pics do them justice. Especially Sarathai and Allonairre.
Ok, well I was torn between Allonairre, The Shadow Kings and Viktors. The Shadow King won in the end though as his has a really nice base to set the model off and the other two, sorry guys, are a bit lacking.
