I know that the griffon mount is not usually considered a viable option for a prince these days, but the IoB model is just so cool that I can't help but want to use it. If you HAD to feild prince on griffon, how would you equip and/or support him? I really like that magic item that negates magic weapons of foes in base contact with him, and I am imagining a scenario where a life mage is buffing him to keep him and the griffon alive. I was also thinking lore of beasts could be interesting to both keep them alive and give them more punch. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!
This is tricky, definitely Great Weapon, I would go with Vambraces of Defense, Armour of Caledor and Magical attacks amulet thing.
Then he can hunt ethereal things against VC.
The challenge with the griffon is how you do use them, they have to hit a flank or rear, I would include cavalry to combo charge so your enemy cant reform to target the Prince.
Thanks for the advice Allonairre! Reading this my thought is that if I am going to include calvary in my list as well, they would also benefit from a mage with lore of beasts. In your experience, is lore of beasts worth it or would I be better off just sticking with life?
My other thought is that the only calvary models I currently have are the underwhelming fast calvary that come with the IoB set. Would they work to set up the combo charges you are referring to or do you think I would be better off investing in some silver helms or dragon princes?
Not sure that anything in Lore of Beasts is of particular benefit but I don't really remember the lore that well, I think life is probably the way to go.
No unfortunately the Ellyrion Reavers won't cut it. Thinking about it the charge range of your infantry probably means that SM or Spears are fine, it will take time to get your Griffon into position so you may be alright. The more I think about it the more I think that the griffons enemy will be steadfast, and the spearmens problem is lack of strength to actually get kills. The 2 units compliment each other well. The griffon can wait deeper than the spears and then countercharge or use its extra movement to charge with the spears. They Griffon can deliver all its attacks from a corner so doesn't need to get the whole model in base to base contact. In saying that I would keep the spears narrow and deep.
Good luck with your Griffon though
Thanks again for the advice! I'll try backing him up with the spearmen and let you know how it goes!
I still use Eltharion and Stormwing in friendly matches. I just know that if I plan on bringing him I need to have plenty of eagles and shadow warriors to tie the war machines up.
The IOB model is pretty much identical to the older Eltharion model, it has the same wargear, so unless your opponent is a real jerk, you can use them as one and the same. With him being pretty good in CC, as well as being a lvl 2 wizard, you've got a pretty complete package in your general. Give him Lore of Beasts, and you've got the makings of something potentially very scary.
