Dont know much at all about Fantasy but i have started building my lists. Please tell me what you think on this 2250 list
Shield of Ptolos
The Other Trickster's Shard
Mage Lvl 2
Seaguard x 20
Seaguard x 20
Archers x 20
Sword Masters x 20
Banner of Eternal FLame
Dragon Princes x 5
Repeater Bolt Thrower x2
Lion Chariot of Chrace
2243 pts. Any idea where i can make it to 2250? or is my list total garbage?
Most people prefer a Lvl4 Archmage over a prince. The 4 spells and +4/+5 to cast/dispell helps keep our magic phase above most others (maybe not lizards).
Your noble needs to be a BSB. Those are almost necessary at this level.
Most people don't prefer fire on a lvl 2. I have great success with a Lvl4 Life and a lvl2 Shadow.
Core is ok, but split the archers up into groups of ten.
Your SM's don't need to be that big. 2 groups of 7 with a muscian is plenty. 20 of them is too big a points sink.
DP's look good
RBT's are overpriced. Maybe you should switch them out for some eagles.
Same with the Chariot. It only takes one cannonball and poof! you're down a ton of points.
Couple changes, but good start!
What should i kit out my archmage with? I would like to get up to 2500 points regardless so i would it be so bad if i took the prince and the archmage? For now i cut out my chariot and one bolt thrower to get the mage in, i really like the bolt thrower however so i would like to have at least 1 in the mix.
My noble has bsb on there
Sorry I missed the BSB on your noble However, I would kit out your BSB with Armor of Caledor and Guardian Phoenix. It'll keep him alive the longest. If you must have AoC on a prince, I like the Helm of Fortune+dragon armor
Lvl4 Archmages could have a variety of options:
Book of Hoeth (super expensive, but worth it. -however, means NO protection)
Seerstaff (choosing spells is nice, especially for life)
Silver Wand (extra spell is almost as nice as choosing, and it's cheaper. However, you might not get that spell you REALLY need (i.e. Dwellers Bellow)
With either of the last 2 take the 4+ ward save in the BRB.
or you could take talisman of saphery and forlariath's robe. This makes him expensive and doesn't help his casting, but it makes him essentially unkillable.
I'd get rid of that prince. Think just how many more troops you can have when you drop his 200+pts. If you must keep him, drop that shield. He should be in a unit at ALL times and if he isn't, that shield does no good against cannons and the like.
Looks good overall, I'd try to add in some great eagles (for war machine hunting) and some Phoenix Guard to act as an anvil. Everything else looks good. (maybe drop the Prince+DP's -that should be enough points for a PG block....... and maybe some SM's too for a larger block of PG.)
I planned on running the prince with my Dragon princes, my noble with some sword masters but i dont know where to put the archmage. I feel the archers range is too great and would keep him out of range for his magic. Maybe with the seaguard? i would be nervous that he would get sucked into combat with them however. I have no eagles in there simply because i dont own the models. Now do i have PG. Right now i am pretty much running IOB and a battalion with the prince/noble set, dragon princes and the extra bolt thrower. Thanks for the help by the way its appreciated
Welcome to the forums DrOcatagon, to High Elves, and to Fantasy in general! This section of the boards is becoming more and more active every day, with plenty of talented people contributing to the discussions, so we're all very glad to have you aboard. For future reference, there's a section at the top of every army forum labelled 'Army Lists', which is where these sorts of threads should go. It's no problem that you put it in the general army section, I can move it for you without any trouble, just keep that in mind for the future. So now that introductions and housekeeping are out of the way, let's get down to your list:
Alright, I understand that you're working with a limited collection of models, a budget, etc. What I'm going to do is simply go through your list and give comments as though you had every HighElf model in the world available to you right now. I understand if you don't take all of my suggestions, but I'd rather aim for the 100% and hit low, than have you hit every suggestion dead-on and only end up with a list that's 75% because of lack of info. So here goes.
For placement, I suggest combining your LSG, dropping a model, and then putting him on the corner so that hopefully the enemy wont even be in contact with him.
I wouldn't bother with Phoenix Guard, to be honest. You can get Spears to fill that role, or even White Lions. The 4+ Wardsave is nice, but you're paying too much only have a +1S to add to it. I'd rather see almost twice as many Spears, or an equal regiment of Stubborn S6 Lions on the table, if you really feel that your typical Spearmen block can't form an anvil for you.
Alright well, I'm off to go create a Quick-Start guide for High Elves, so that hopefully I can steer more newcomers in the right direction.
Capt is right, as usual. 14 SM's is pretty good at this level. I see where he's coming at.
However, I think you are wrong on one point. Champions can never be forced to go to the back of the line, only characters can.
His DP's are there to escort his prince I believe. However Dr. the Capt is right- take more of them if that's your plan!
I have to agree that Lothern Sea Guard are worth the points. I wouldn't say never use High Elf Archers but I would say either use a spear regiment or an archer regiment. With the possibly exception of Dwarf Crossbows with double handed weapons, units which go for both shooting and hand to hand generally aren't worth the points you spend on them.
As a starter army I would keep the unit of 20 sword masters because they will really do some damage. However you need be aware that Sword Masters are very vulnerable to enemy shooting and magic. With only a 5+ armour save and T3 they can die in droves. Personally I would try to practice using smaller units of Sword Masters backing up a large unit of Pheonix Guard.
