how do you have your hih elves ranked up?
spearmen 4x4 4x5 5x4 and so of
same with swordmasters
do you have cav 5 strong or 4x2
i am asking because i am starting high elves and only have one box of spearmen so far
and i wondered what are the advantages of whta you use?
Spearmen: 5x4. That way they get full ranks bonus and 16 attacks when in combat (not charging).
Swordmasters probably 5x3. I prefer them slightly smaller since they are fragile anyway.
Cavalry, definitely only one rank. Either 5 or 6 models depending on points.
Im taking my spearmen in 3x7. 22 attacks (21 models+1 champion) good phalanx for my alex themed army
Depends who you're fighting. If it's opponents that you can match or outclass, a wide, shallow formation is fine. If it's vs a better opponent, then the narrower and deeper formation is better.
If you're 7x3 vs a better opponent, you are pretty vunerable. They can attack more of your units, meaning more will die and you get less rank bonus = less chance of winning the round. Your attacks probally won't do a great deal in return. There's also the chance you lose 25% of your guys, since 33% are exposed.
If you were 4x5 vs this opponent, you can't lose 25% in one turn (can't remember, they can only kill guys in the first row??). You also are guaranteed of the ranks bonus. Ok, so you only get 12 attacks instead of 21. Spears aren't going to win vs a tougher opponent through kills though, it's going to be done with bonuses. The idea is to then hold until a support unit can flank them. Spears are not an offensive weapon. I am looking to use spearelves (all 120+ of them) to hold my battle line, and to tie down enemy units.
Vs opponents you can match or outclass, I'd think a wide formation would be good. Is 7x3 too extreme, you get all your guys on the enemy unit? I guess you probally would vs goblins etc. In that case spears could be become a more offensive weapon.
4x5 vs tough, 7,7,6 vs weaker??
"If I rank my Goblins 1x20, those Chaos Chocen Kinghts in combat with me can't only kill one a turn."
Lol yeh. Otherwise how are you meant to break a deep ranked unit on the 1st turn by kills.
Anyway I change my answer to 4x5+1 vs toughies.
