Welcome to Librarium Online!
Do you remember back in the day when highelves were good, where you could field a cavalry army and feel safe in the knowledge that WS5 could keep you safe, against the hordes of evil. and then the new high elf book gets released (written by a grudgebearing wood elf) who trys to seduce us with cheap magic items, and toughness 3 lords. but to add insult to injury he make Silver helms, the nobles of uthaan stumble around with WS 4. placeing them on par with marauders and empire swordsmen. EMPIRE SWORDSMEN!!!!!!!! it is as sad day for all elven kind when we have the same skill as an empire swordsman, other armies have ws5 core troops ist time we had the same.
Further more fore the points we pay highelf players pay we deserve the chance to field more that 1 good unit of cavalry, rather than medocre cannon fodder.
The other things i felt should have remained are archers to fire in 2 ranks and more monsters uthaan is the land of magic and monsters after all you know, so is it really that much to expcet a unicorn and a pegasus, it's not like i'm asking for an Emporer Dragon, but that would be nice and oh so dirty.
Please post your thoughts on this topic as i hear there may be a new highelf book in the pipe line and i'd like to hope they do a good job on it and make highelves how they should be, like what has been done with the new dwarf book, and hope it can turn me away from my now beloved dark side. NYa hahhahhahah :w00t:
Swordmasters = brilliant, best H2H elvish troops, they have an impressive WS6.
Dragon princes, a significant 'upgrade' of silverhelms, need to be lesser in combat than their Hoeth brethren. WS5
Silver helms, clearly now cannot be as good as DP or no one would ever want DP since they're a fair bit more expensive. So what is left? WS4.
To be honest, I wouldn't say thats the most critical thing that needs fixing in the army. WS doesn't really do much anyway IMO. Archers need serious fixing, as do seaguard and phoenix guard. The rest need slight tweeks, those are the most critical though. Helms are definitely not a part of the army I'd complain about, mine always perform brilliantly.
...and back in those days chaos knights were WS6...
But I digress. Back in 4th/5th ed you could get away with obscene hammer units and virtually no strategy. These days all armies require a fair amount of thought to win the game.
The need for upgrades should be tempered by the desire for a tactical, thinking game.

I hear what u gents are saying but as a long time HE player from the second edition. I find that the new HE list is medocre we r now faced with expensive slightly elite troops, they just dont cut the mustard or anything else for that matter! The only way SH are of any use is in bigger units which makes them less manoverable, moreover the dwarves have been re done to give them the charecteristics they deserve i.e tough well armoured and very stogy, witha runeic twist.
HE are left with chars that are pretty lame and expensive and fragile units. You say WS doesnt make that much diff well Against ws 2 5's would be required to hit Silver Helms, as you would expect with he noble vs a skeleton.and SH Vs creatures with Scorpofic musk SH would have ws 3 instead of 2. And for the points you pay for A fully armoured SH you would at least want 4's to hit vs chaos knights with them both on equal ws5.
As strewart says QUOTE you don't want them as good as DP (who insidently have ws6 +higher I + LD and are immune to Fire, not to mention the banner, and your only allowed 1 unit of) but a 1 point increase wouldn't make that much difference.
But trust an old HE general, every HE cav general will take there 1 and only unit of dragon princes and rack the rest up on SH it's not fair that HE should only be allowed 1 good unit of cavalry, and the rest relatively ineffective. Remember HE are supposed to be Fast, Accurate(WS) With Good Magic And monsters, not strong and tough. So give us a chance to return 2 the days where people were proud to game with the goodie goodies, and not have to feel the need to choose between a lev4 wiz or a drogon in a 2000pts battle.
Yeah, I remember how a single Silver Helm costed like, more than 40 points.Originally Posted by Apocolypse_Dude

I'm not saying HE don't need changes, I cosider the list pretty weak overall, especially compared to the older editions, I'm saying the cavalry don't really need changes. I'm not sure why you think you need silver helms in huge units for them to do anything worthwhile, I run mine in units of 5-6 and faaar prefer that to larger units, they perform brilliantly. Usually end up being pretty much best performing unit in my army, along with dragon princes.
although i haven't been around so long to see Ws 5 having Sh, i do want to say that silverhelms are IMHO one of the best units HE have at the moment.
we have 16'' moving heavy cav as core!
with the options to clad you Sh in more or less armour makes them a nice unit.
in the usual size of 5/6 for flank breaking they are the absolute best.
about the rest, yes HE need an update but not because of the sh, there are plenty of other units that need more improving (eg archers, phoenix guard)
hope it helps
