I'm starting High Elves, and at christmas I will be getting: the codex, spearmen box, lord blister, mage blister, and the battalion. Is there anything else that you advise i should get aswell?
That seems to be a good group of thing to start with, so for anything else just get what you like modelwise or fluffwise. Perhaps another box of spearmen would be good, as that would give two units of up to 24 each, but you'll have plenty of painting to do already with one box of spears and a batallion...
Eagles are alway good, although they're direct only right now. I think I heard that they're working on a new one, but it wasn't ready as soon as they'd hoped.
Its been rumored that HE are next to get a new army book after the Empire, theres a very long Warseer thread on it *here*. I think the rumours are that originally they had planned to do Vampire Counts before HE, but the HE just progressed faster, so be aware that you might finish some models and then the new ones hit the shelves...Of course it is still rumour, and it could still end up being a while.
I started recently myself, as even though it won't be too long before they get updated I seem to be one of the few people who quite like the current models. Okay there is room for improvement but I don't think they're anywhere near as bad as some people make out. I'm more interested in what they're going to do to the rules.
Welcome to the ranks of the Asur.
Bolt throwers, silver helms and swordmasters are solid choices - they give you speed, reach and some serious combat ability. Just remember to work out what you want your army to do first .It's an army book, 40k is the codex game .I will be getting: the codex

I do not agree, as under 2000pts (as you will be with those boxes) you can only have one rare choice which will be take by the repeater boltthrower.
So to answer:
I don't think you would need anything else, save maybe another RBT, as you get 2 for one choice.

Don't i get a choice?:cry:Originally Posted by cebwj
i would have to go with swordmasters, a great combat unit, either used to protect a mage or provide some weight going forwards, just try to ensure they don't have to take a charge (having an eagle nearby is good as they are valuable) plus you get to give their champions magic items and take magic banners etc.
It all depends on what you want your army to do my friend, and whether or not you're that interested in fluff. Spearmen, Archers and Silver Helms (possibly one of the greatest core choices in any of the armies imho) are always abundant, and the elite units = Swordmasters, White Lions, Phoenix Guard and sometimes Dragon Princes are taken depending on supporting fluff.....
One thing i would also check out is the tactica that used to be on here (mods- where did it go?can we have it back or a link to where it went?please... ). It was very helpful and helped beginners and experienced players alike bring good tactics to the table. Just remember you're not going to have the power to march down the table and bowl into the enemy, or sit back and shoot away until there is no one left (you can to a certain extent)...more often than not you'll have to out-think your opponent, and HE magic oftens lends a very helpful hand in pushing the battle into your favour. Always try to engage in close-combat on your terms, and may you preserve the ways of Ulthuan gracefully and with valour.
Well, no, not really. Since RBTs and Great Eagles are vastly superior to either of the other choices, there's really no point in choosing anything else, unless you like shooting yourself in the foot.Originally Posted by Stonehambey
I would suggest a unit of Swordmasters, one or two Repeater Bolt Throwers, and possibly a Great Eagle if you fancy (cashflow permitting of course). All of those choices will serve you very well on the battlefield.
All the old Specialist Games resources are currently being uploaded at the Tactical Command forums, and you can find them here: http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/fanatic/.
I say get more spears, that way you can make two full, decent sized units. Of course feel free to go with other things like swordmasters first if you want to. They're all good. Like Anacron said, though, just stay away from anything rare that doesn't fly or shoot long pointy sticks at people. (If you like white lions though you can make them special by taking the lion guard honour on your hero, but I say stick with swordmasters)
ultimately in comes down to what you like as a player.....depending on your budget it is always a good idea to try as many different combinations as you can (you can always substitute models in friendly games to try..) this way you'll get the feel of how you want to play HE, play with whatever gives you the most enjoyment out of the game, unless you're one of those people who winning and obliterating your opponent is the only thing that matters, in which case you should look at a couple of armies and not our highborn Ulthuan host.
