everyone thinks swordmasters are good, be more specific. I like to use Masters in units of 15 or 16 to support spears, or ive found units of 10 are good for flanking (thanks Slai!
Proxy an army and see what you like. See how effective things are. Thats what i do and i havent bought a unit in 2 years that i havent used most games(ie,something like men at arms or glade gaurdians or pheonix gaurd).
But here is some help
lord/heros: your preferance. Our magic is stronger than our H2H guys, but we also have awsome magic items.
troops: your either going to go for a defensive army or a cavalry army. Thats what wins. So either buy spearmen and archers in a 2-1 or 3-1 ratio(3 spearman 1 archer),or load up on silver helms. Yes,lotheran seagaurd look cool and powerful. Well, their not. 15 points for a T3 5+ save, never worth it. Stick with the spearman or archers.
special: reavers and dragons if your going cavalry, along with a chariot or two. 2 Reavers for every 1 dragon prince. If defensive,go for a unit of swordmasters,16 or so is good, and if you like skirmishers buy 8-10 shadow warriors
rare: you have 2 great options and two horrible options. If you like defensive, buy 2 repeater bolt throwers. If you like cavalry, buy 2 great eagles. Dont buy pheonix gaurd or white lions, they look cool, but their not worth it
so there ya go,hope that helps
Actually, White Lions ARE worth it. As a rare slot: no. But in a defensive army, Lion Cloak might actually be worth it if you stick that character in a spearman regiment (will last for ever. Use it to jam up anything strong if you can). This means you get White Lions as Special.
Also, 16 Swordmasters is, imo, not worth it. Use 10 in 2 ranks and protect them (give them a commander with Sacred Insence or conceal them from shooting and give the Champion the Amulet of Purifying Flame for some magic defense) . Paying 4x13 pts for +1 CR is still not worth it. Rather save the pts for something else, and use the Swordmasters for a flanking force with your Spearmen rather than a main force.
Also, White Lions are great for using in a wood. Luring enemy units into it, charging out from it, or just generally making the enemy nervous of being around the wood, due to the White Lions' great impact on charge. True, there may not be forests on every game table though =/ . Bus if you have them as a Rare choice, Eagles and RBTs are way better choices.
If you have 2 ranks of 10,thats 20 swordmasters. Hardly a flanking force with their cost. Plus how many units have 10 ranks for your swordmasters to charge into from the flank? A 3x5 or 8x2 formation allows for casualties to be taken from shooting and still be effective in combat. As for white lions,if your enemy charges you with a lance formation, and your white lions are able to flank charge them next turn, their worth it. Otherwise,i see very little use for them.
Well, Admir, I assure you that the White Lions are quite effectful if you use them like I described and have tried out some times. But if they're not your cup of tea, then Im not going to make you taste it =) .
About the flanking swordmasters: Why in the hell would you want ranks? If they are used as a flanking force, I assume your main unit (the one the swordmasters are supporting) covers the +3 rank bonus (IE spearmen) . If not, then you are doing something wrong. Flanking forces should not be used for rank bonuses, but for kills. Which a 5 wide swordmaster regiment does nicely. You get all attacks in on an enemy unit ranked 3+ deep, and any cav unit ranked 2+ deep.
Dont get your swordmasters shot... Please. Screen them, hide them, stick a lord in with the Sacred Insence, or something. They arent worth losing to shooting.
I give them ranks so they dont take up too much space. That simple. Most opponents wont have all that many ranks,6 wide ranks are usually enough, and compared to 10 they take up less space on the feild. THis allows for tighter formations.
OK, I see your point. I just think more attacks is better. But I can see the need for a slim formation, if you havent got any room to manouver.
Anyways, back to the topic =P :
Id get some Silver Helms, those are always neat. If cav heavy: bunker up on Silver Helms. If defensive, go spearmen and some (about 10) swordmasters. Either way, Great Eagles and Chariots are both a good choice to buy, as they are useful in both armies.
I want a offensive army, i allready bought 8 silverhelms.
So i need a little help on what units to buy next.
