    swordmasters are a ton better!
cheaper points, greater WeaponSkill, Strength, can carry banners, you name it, they can do it and they are only a special choice.
PG may look cool and cause fear, but they are a rare choice. In a larger game I might consider them, but you really can't get a better bang for your buck than taking great eagles and bolt throwers. I wish they would make PGs a special choice, then I would take them all the time, but until then, I ll always take the RBT and Great eagles.
BY the way, I play 2250 and usually play a variation on this list

Prince DragonArmor, EnchantedShield Blade of Darting Steel Vambraces of Defense (w/SM)
Mage lvl2 Seer Jewel of Dusk (w/SM)
Commander DrgonArmor, shield, Helm of Fortune, Sword of Might (w/Spears)
Mage lvl2 Seer, Dispel Scroll (w/Spears)
Dragon Princes x5 Banner of Sorcery
    *drakemaster Dispell Scroll
16x Swordmasters w/Full Comm -6wide- blademaster swd of battle and Magic Banner
    5xSilver Helms w/musician
    5xSilver Helms w/musician
    2x RBT
    2x Great Eagles
    22x Spearmen w/Full command -6wide- WAR Banner

I ll switch some of the items depending on who I m playing and what looks to my advantage.

I haven't heard anything good about Phoenix Guard. They cost too much for the minimal gain they grant. High Elves tend to lack in strength, and the Swordmasters make up for that weakness with their fast great weapons. Fear may not be helpful, depending on the army you face. I'd go with Swordmasters.

    Hope that helps,

Swordsmasters are definitly the way to go because there high weponskilll and special rules more than make for there low toughness and add some high strength attacks to your army.
They also just look so cool.

    One word:

    Swordmasters.

Thet have the killing power of chargiing knights, hit about everything on a 3+, cheap in points (elf-wise).
Not to mention they are special and Phoenix Guard are Rare, meaning with SM tyou can still take eagles and RBT's in you're list!:w00t:

I have to agree with everyone else.

Phoenix Guard aren't actually all that bad but their main problem is that they take up a rare slot. You want to use rare slots for RBTs and Eagles. If not, then why not? Phoenix Guard just aren't good enough to demand the use of a rare slot over those other options. That could be solved by moving them to special but I'm not too happy about that. Phoenix Guard should be very rare and I would like to see that rarity translate across to the game, but that's lessened a bit if you move them to special.

Swordmasters are the way to go, although personally I'm not too fond of the mnins, just something about them doesn't seem right to me, but in game terms they're the ones you want.

If you attached a hero to the swordmasters, and gave him the fear causing banner, wouldn't that eliminate the last thing that phoenix guard have over swordmasters? Sure, its a pretty expensive banner, but it would mean that phoenix guard are in no way better than swordmasters. Though, the fear causing isn't that great anyway since the chances of an elite unit like either of those outnumbering an enemy is slim to none.

I think phoenix guard are underrated. They are a nasty unit, and can be tooled up well.

    Plus the models look fantastic!

But swordmasters boast +1 WS, +1 Str, cheaper cost etc... and the rare choices are often already used up in many armies. I'm sure phoenix guard are a perfectly decent unit in their own right, but if I had to pick one of them, I know which one it would be, but there is no reason why you couldn't take both, esspecially since they're both 0-1 units.

That is really the only thing Phoenix Guard have going for them; and I do agree they look a lot better than Swordmasters. I'd take them if they were a Special choice - but I'm not giving up RBTs or Eagles for them.
