I was wondering if anyone had used the Banner of Sorcery in their army and if they had how did it work because for only 50 points you can put it in a couple of different units and you get an extra 1-3 power dice every turn which could allow you to cast another spell. Also, if you did use it what unit did you put it in. Thanks in advance.
I have a friend who plays HE and uses it every game. It seems to work wonders, but then he does have a habit of rolling 5s and 6s! >.<
Yea because what I was thinking was that I could have a level 1 Mage and use those dice with the army's power dice and give him the the Seer Honour so that he could use those extra dice to cast the Flames of Fickel and then any other mage could use them when he isn't casting that and only one power dice would be wasted a turn.
I`ve used it a couple of times and it has been of no use for me, I`ve had such a terrible luck with casing, but generally I think it`s a good item.
you can really only put it in special or rare catagories since they are the only ones that can carry 50pt banners. For me, that is either the dragon princes or swordmasters.
I take it every game. If you roll well, and have the jewel of dusk, you could have 2-4 extra dice, even with 2 lvl 2 mages, it makes a huge difference. It usually gives everyone 3 dice for each spell, it helps you get your spells off a lot easier. In fact, the cool thing about HE magic is with the special stuff, you can create a level 3 mage and still have a prince in the army in 2000pt games.
I think it's a great item. An item that adds one die usually costs 25 points, and over the course of a game, you should average 2 die per turn, so it's worth it IMO. Plus, the extra damage you can do casting would make it pay off as well.
Use the banner in armies larger than 1000pts when you can afford more than a single mage to take advantage of it. The extra dice combined mean you can either get extra spells cast or with channeler honour can get the high casting levels spells like flames going much easier (I once had two simultaneous flames going on my opponents army over several turns, there wasnt much left after). The points damage you can do with the extra spelsl easily make up the cost, and the only weakness is the unit the banner is held by.
I've only broken my HE army out a handful of times in this Ed., but it doesn't appear in my HE force until starting at about 1.5K. I like it and think it's functional but I really feel it comes into it's own when it's helping one big nasty wizard or better yet two smaller ones, and at 1000 points I'm still trying to cram more mounted and conventional hero kill power into my army and the points are just too tight (though I will admit if you do cram it in in smaller games your opponent is obviously less likely to have counter dice to it since he'll have fewer wizards too).
I have been thinking of making up a wizard heavy list that would be for 1k just for fun not for winning/tournaments, and if I finish that list then I'm sure it'll make an appearence for the reason in (). It's just hard making a wizard heavy list for HE because they've got no cheap troops to make up the gap for wizards being so costly for small games. I'm debating using DoW units to do it.

You win with VP, NOT with kills
Even though it is tight, I've found it possbile to field two mages, a unit of swordmasters, an eagle and two units of silver helms in a 1k game. The swordmasters can then carry the banner of sorcery, and protect the wizards, if they're not mounted. Works very effectively against most opponents...
You can still mount your wizards and put them in a unit of footmen. They just take up a little more room (create more ranks possibly) and get a 5+ armor save that they wouldn't get otherwise. The cool thing about HE magic, is that you can create a lvl3 mage without using up a Lord slot. Seer, Channeler, Silver wand lets you pick 3 spells and roll up to 4 dice and you can still field a Prince if you want in 2000pt games.
The banner is a must in this kind of game because other armies, even if they have a lvl4, they run out of dice on the big spells. With the Banner and jewel of dusk, we usually have enough dice to at least attempt all of the spells we have selected and have a better chance at getting them off. It makes the magic phase much more productive (unless you miscast)
