I was wondering why everybody says that sea guard are overpriced and useless.
My personal use for them is to set them in front of my bolt throwers and then to shoot at people and take the charge from whatever comes to get the RBT's.
If anyone could give me a reason not to use them or any ideas of how to use them that would be great.
Because you pay a lot of points for doing 2 things and they aren't great for either.
They are the same as spearmen so not that bad there but you pay 4 points extra for that and for those 4 points they can shoot but if you rank them up only the front rank can shoot and if you string them out you might as well have payed less for archers. They will get more popular is the high elves shoot in 2 ranks in the new book.
So it's not that their skills are bad for the points but they don't work well together.
They're good, but only in the right circumstances, and to be honest the right circumstances don't come around often.
Ideal situation is the enemy is slow, takes 2 turns to get to the sea guard and then gives them a turn to reform. The only troops i can think that are slow enough are dwarves, and surely if they are dwarves then you're going down in combat anyway right?
On paper the theory sounds great, but when you put them into practise they are less than appealing because you could get a unit of archers and a unit of spearmen. Furthermore if one of those units get wiped out you still have a reserve.
The only use I can think of is a flanking unit. Pepper them up for a few turns, and when they turn around to charge your annoyingly expensive unit you reform and get charged.
