Yeah, for any kind of scenery, find a hobby shop that does train scenery. Train geeks are about as anal as wargaming geeks, so it'll be the same quality as the wargaming terrain, but the train shops sell their stuff cheaper.

Nostrafus is right. Every week when i go work for my mum i always take a walk past the local train hobby store on my lunch break just to see what stuff i can buy.

Last week they got this new thing in and it was a whole terrain piece in itself. There was a bombed runway and some sandbag bunkers positioned around and every stuff like patches of slime and mud where the earth had been trampled and harrased by war so much.

It went straight into the guys window, anyways to cut a long story short i asked if i could have it when he was done and he's agreed to sell it to me for £125 as its about 3' x 6' and extremely well detailed, apparently he makes it all himself!

White dwarf has published some really neat articles on building your own terrain and buildings. Its not as quick as painting a necron warrior, but the satisfaction of building your own block of buildings rocks!

But if you don't like building that kinda stuff, try armorcast. They have a lot of neat buildings and terrain, and it s so much cheaper than forge world (which still rocks, but you gotta have $$$ for it&#33

For one answer to your original question, One, have you thought about the expanded polystyrene support structures that come with new boxed TVs, Videos, Microwaves etc. These are often strange angular shapes and with a coat of emulsion type paint and some 'weathering' would do fine for larger 40K buildings.
You could ask at any local Hi-Fi type shops if they can suggest a source, unless you know anyone who is buying those goods.

Just a thought...

I have to say, this guy does some nice stuff:
http://www.gardenofwar.gq.nu/

I ordered one of his special pieces, a landing pad center, for a friend's birthday. It arrived 3 days after payment was made and looked very good. I plan on getting a full 4' by 8' table of his work.

Also, Armorcast does a lot of stuff (under their Terraform line):
