Alright, I'm buying the beginings of my tyranid army this saturday, and I need help deciding colors for the paint, as im buying that at the same time. anyone have any sugestions?
ok, I took a look at those paint jobs in the codex. how would something like hive fleet leviathan look with the skull white body, but like the highlighted red of hive fleet krakken on the carapace? lol I have no color coordination skills.

I love it when people ask for painting advice and immediately others start posting images to show off their models.
To OP, do whatever color schemes you want, provided the colors work well together. The pictures in the codex are a good start. And btw, notice that the tyranids in the codex are not plain white on red. There are actually several layers of color worked up to a highlight of white.
My friend who knows nothing about warhammer but is an art major says that the purple and white tyranids from the codex look the best.
well yea i realized that, after reading over the how to paint thing in the codex.
so for my tyranids, how does this sound? (please point out anything wrong with my idea)
ok, start with a primer coat of chaos black, then scab red over the carapace, then highlight with red gore, and a final highlight of blood red.
for the exoskeleton, a layer of bleached bone, followed by some watered down color of red to get in between the ribs. then either a mix of bleached bone and skull white, and highlight with watered down skull white, or just the skull white by itself.
alot of that is pulled straight from the codex, but im not 100% sure that with this combination (the reds and the whites) that those are the right shades to be using, any insight?
and btw, does anyone have any suggestions on whether I should paint the carapace, or exoskeleton first?
And I like to do skin first before carapace armor, but thats my personal preference.
ok, so how many layers of paint is too many? like when does it start loosing detail?
i painted a few nids with blue "skin" and dark purple carapace, i then streaked the carapace with the lighter purple and then tentacle pink, i high lighted the "skin" with enchanted blue, washed the whole model with a mixture of black ink, water and duture floor polish, it turned out nice, ive gotten a lot of compliments on the few i did, and i only wish i had pics.
alot of people dont like colorful nids, but i dont mind them.
