I've just finished painting my first squad of my first army, witch hunters.
Been looking at some of the professionals and their paint work, and I was just hoping I could get some constructive critisim (be nice, please!) on my first attempt.
(sorry about the links, the images are a little wide)
I really like the colour scheme I've chosen, so I'm just after some improvements of my painting.
My next project is a squad of seraphim, which I'm thinking of doing white amour, and blue robes either highlighted with silver or gold.
Firstly, welcome to LO (Someone has to say it, I suppose)
Secondly, for a first army, that's excellent! The flames and fur lining on the Cannoness look pretty good.
Quick question, though. The white on the cloaks of the special weapons troops looks a bit dirty; is this intentional? (It kind of looks like it is, seeing as the white visors are a much more solid colour, but I thought I would ask)
Hope the rest of the army goes well.
May I second what Brett has said.
For a first army, that's superb. I also particularly like the flames. You have the gradation from light to dark down pat.
Some simple techniques for first timers:
Clean and prep your models.
Water your paints.
Use others/texts as a reference.
Take care of your brushes.
Use a pallette.
You may already do those, if so, practice makes perfect and feel free to ask any questions.
There are many painters/modelers with a wealth of experience very willing to accept new people into the fold.
Oh and as for the seraphim, IMO I'd stay with the scheme you have now, for uniformity and so you can improve on the the way you paint those colours, but that's just me.
Frankly, I've only done one squad of WH and then got distracted, so I'm no expert. But here's my attempt if you're interested.
Also check out the WH sub forum, there are loads of ideas there and great advice on tactics and army lists.
I know one of the LOCS team is a WH player/painter called SmokWawelski Link. A good person for advice.
Enjoy and good luck.

welcome to the boards, nice first mini's
as youre undercoating your models black and painting ontop of it you can go about getting a better colour by three methods, use multiple thin coats to achieve a smoother solid finish, alternatively use the new GW foundation paints which are designed to cover over solidly, or just undercoat white which is easier to paint ontop of.
most areas on a model will either need two or more shades of similar colours, a highlight on edges or some sort of blending, this makes your model look more dynamic
ill use your cannoness as a good example to help:
- Where the white meets the gold, you could either blackline (paint or leave a thin line of black between two areas of different colours) or use darker shades where the colours meet.
- In areas of recess such as the fingers or where armour joins, there should be a darker colour in the gaps as less light would reach these areas
- For your Seals you can paint a darker colour first and then the colour you normally would paint on top or highlight with a orange/yellow
i have posted a picture of one of my mini's with some comments on to help aid you:
- Browns, ive noticed there isnt any highlighting/shading on your pouches/backpack area, again use two or more colours to shade and on the edges you can paint a lighter brown either by mixing yellow into your brown or using a lighter brown paint. You can also do this with your metals and other areas.
keep up the good work, hope this helps, look forward to seeing your seraphim
It is a very nice try and a good painting effect you have managed to produce...
The comments the other users made are very helpful... I would like to second, or third, the remark for caution to white color... Also the same problem with the white has the Superior and the Canoness, as others have already said.
But all in all I believe it is a very nice first army you have made there!
Thanks to all the people showing faith in me
