I'm painting up an Archaon, Lord of the Endtimes model for my brother as a gift, and I'm going to paint the horse (whose name I've forgotten) black with a mane of flames etc. BUT i've realized that flat black flesh just looks weird and I'm not sure how to make it look better. Any advice on painting black horses?

Do you want it to be a brown or grey shade of black? Whichever it is, mix up a really dark colour of the one you want, and use that as a basecoat. It still looks black, but just a little more natural. Then work up with highlights from there. Hope this helps.
You can also paint the highlights orange and yellow like the fire is lighting the horse, though it may take some practice to get it to look right.
