First Founding CHapters
Offical Successor Chapter
Alright, so I've just recently accuired some Deathwatch shoulderpads, boltguns, heads, and other Inquisitorial icons. All I need to do is add them to some assault marines and paint them black...but I want to do a little bit more with them...
I think the coolest thing about the Deathwatch is that they take Marines from every chapter in existence, so it gives me a unique oppertunity to model many of them without dedicating an entire force or squad to one chapter. Unfortunatly this leads into a big problem:
Which ten of the infinatly many Chapters should I model?
Well, I've narrowed it down to two choices. I'd either want to model all 9 First Founding Chapters (Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, etc...) or I'd want to model some of the unpopular/unknown official Successor Chapters, ones that don't really get the limelight that often. So lets discuss this:
9 First Founding Chapters
Pros: They already have an established look, theme, and regalia, easily recognised...plus, most of them are just plain too cool to overlook. I could easily and quickly create a diverse squad.
Cons: They've been done TO DEATH! How many other people have an Ultramarine in their Deathwatch team? Probably alot.
Pros: Completly unique! Not many people know who the Scythes of the Emperor, or Howling Gryphons are, much less care to model them, even though they are offical GW chapters. Some of them have very colorful and unique backgrounds and themes.
Cons: Although unique and colorful, thier themes and regalia are not very developed, and while this might give me a bunch of leway in converting them, I have to make up somthing on my own; much more difficult.
So what do you guys think? First Founders? or Successor Chapters?
If you think Successor Chapters, let me know which ones you like and what attracts you to them? Possibly some conversion ideas???
Thanks to all in advance!
I think the Dark Angels codex fluff says (or implies) that they wouldnt endevor in any co-operative actions *Due to their massivly known secret"
98% of Crack users become criminals that steal & sell computers, the other 2% actually know how to use them and become MODs! lol
Laugh while you can, Monkey-Boy!
I voted for First Founding Chapters because I can honestly say I have never seen anyone who uses a deathwatch team, so even though they're more "generic" they're still pretty rare. Hopefully we'll see more of them if the inquisition codex is made next year!

I'd say use a mix of both. Find Space Marine chapters that have a history of hunting down and exterminating Aliens and then just figure out who you want to be the leader of your team (an easy way to do this is to dice off for it or do an Arena of Death in which your Marines fight in CC for the position of team leader). Then, look at the chapters that participated in the 3rd War for Armageddon, as well as chapters like the Scythes of the Emperor, Lamenters, Crimson Fists, Mentors, Iron Snakes, Red Scorpions (they fought in the Taros Campaign, didn't they?), etc. You know what would be really unique? An Exorcist Marine in the Deathwatch, because it's so completely uncharacteristic. No one would have thought of it. Besides, what's so different about fighting a plague of Daemons and a plague of Tyranids anyway?
I have a squad of Deathwatch myself, and to be honest I think you just have to go with what you want to do. Mine are a mix - some of them I put together with a particular chapter in mind, whereas others, I built first, then decided on the chapter based on my gut feeling.
I must admit, I have two Ultramarines in mine, including the leader, but then they are my Chapter and I assume the kill team is based in the same sector as Ultramar so it makes sense.
I have a Blood Angel in there because he is using his bolter and combat knife CQC style, I have an Iron Hand because I used a sergeant head a bionic eye on, I even have a Dark Angel because he is gesturing with a pointy sword... I also have a Raven Guard with a power sword and an Imperial Fist with a heavy bolter earmarked, but on the other hand, I plan on coverting a hunting lance as a CCW for an Iron Snake, and I want to add a Mortifactor after reading Warriors of Ultramar, and a Scythe of the Emperor... maybe a Mantis Warrior as well... like I said, just see what fits.
(I was even planning on putting a Soul Drinker on there at one point but too many people would probably be smug so I thought I'd leave him out).
I voted for the Successor Chapters... The reason is not the colorful schemes as the Deathwatch are painted black with only the shoulderpads differing... The reason is as you said that the First Founding Chapters are too worked with... and this is kind of boring for me!
Thanks to all the people showing faith in me
I sometimes feel that everyone will leave me and they will be on their own...
Um, Dont some of the founding chapters not want to be part of the deathwatch? I can remember which ones at the moment, but it was in a white dwarf, and that only some of the founding chapters get involved. I think that would be the right one though.... I would actually just mix it up, to get the most colorful options possible. I think it had something to do with "adhereing" to the index astartes or something like that
"This sure ain't no pansy Eldar Armor, Son"
185th Cadian Armored Div.
"One Shot, One Kill"
Western Border Patrol of Athel Loren
LOL, I too was itching to so the same thing...I even thought of using the Deathwatch rules to make a Soul Drinker squad. (Librarian leading an elite squad = Sarpedon leading Itkinos, Luko, Tellos, Pallas, Lygris, etc...) I might yet so something like this later. The books were too damned good, and I can't wait for the next installation!Originally Posted by chrispcarter
As far as the mixing of the two; yes, its probably more accurate than either one of these two choices, but I've seem to got my mind set on an 'all or nothing' mode. I either want one or the other. I know, I'm weird. <_<;;;
Well, there hasn't been THAT many votes yet, but I'm guessing that the board is going to be pretty much 50/50 on the poll, but its slightly leaning towards the Successors, as am I. I'm not decided yet though, so I can still be swayed towards the First Founders if given a good reason.
Please talk it up some more, I want to hear your opinions and ideas!
Oh, and Rep to anyone with a good, informative, or inspirational post!
I voted successor chapters.
1. Because I play Lamenters and waht is left of them is in the Kill teams (together with the Scythes).
2. Because they are lesser know and is just incredibly funny to bring up guys like the Blood drinkers, the Marines Errant, the Executioners, the Mentors and so on and then let people guess who they are.
3. Because 1st founding chapters are boring. There atre just too many people playing them.
Shut up and play.
I also had an idea what I was thinking about this that instead of a vet with a powerfist I might use a model with a servo arm.
Obivously it he wouldn't get the extra attack but it would look nice.
I'd been toying with the idea of a Sarpedon conversion for a while, but I re-read the books and realise he doesn't look as cool as I thought he did. I imagined he was a normal marine but with relatively thin spider legs coming from his back (like the taloned arms of Enyzyme II for those who are familiar with The Guyver), but when I read that he has the six spider legs instead of his own I was a bit.. meh. I might still do one "my way" just to try and show how aesome it looked in my head!
