Yep, you read right. I want stormtroopers that do NOT look like the Kasrkins.
"But, but, Canew," I hear you protest. "I... I don't understand! The Kasrkins pwn! They're the best models GW has made EVER! No one could POSSIBLY want any OTHER models for their stormtroopers! Don't you want to use the models that EVERYBODY ELSE USES??? They're the BEST! They... they... they *defecates self with excitement*... aw, man, not again!"
Yes, I admit it, I HATE them. That bit above is a joke, and I sincerely mean no real offense to those of you who enjoy them. If you like 'em in your army, that's fine, but I never liked 'em much in the first place, and the idea that everybody else insists on using them and that GW has NO other option easily available makes me hate them even more. I also don't like metal models, and am in the middile of a custom plastic version that is a throwback to the previously-available metal stormtrooper models which, I think, look much cooler. Course, those were metal too, hence the plastic project, and yes, I'll post pics when done.
Thing is, the in-progress conversion is a test for ISTs for my Daemonhunters army, and I'm thinking WAY ahead to the IG regiment I'm designing, which will resemble (but be in no way related to) the Tallarn, which means lotsa greenstuffed headwraps, loose clothing, etc.
Now, I'd LOVE some IG stormtroopers/grenadiers in that army, and the obvious choice is just to use the same conversion painted differently, but I just can't figure out a way to make them "fit" in with the rest of the crew. I've heard the Death Korps has its own stormtrooper variant, and I'm told by the fluffmeisters that it would not violate the "rules" if I created my own, as long as I made sure my guys had guns that are clearly distinguishable from regular lasrifles, something resembling carapace armour, and possibly rebreathers. Can anyone offer a suggestion of how a model could be made that satisfies these conditions but looks like something that would fit into a Tallarn army. Somehow, rebreather-wearing stormtroopers in headwraps sounds a bit silly to me. Any thoughts? I'm also using WWI/WWII Northern Africa troops as inspiration, too. Any suggestions are welcome.
Segmented armour plates attached the outside of to looser fatigues would be my first port of call... and making sure the lasguns looked overpovered i.e. hellguns...
The easiest way to distinguish them would be a uniform type element - like the berets worn by so many of the world's special forces (though obviously this would need adapting to "special head dress", some kind of sash, or some particular fluffy item like the tooth or claw of some nasty hailing from their home world - or even somthing as simple as a coloured band around one of their arms, or differernt coloured headscarves (that way you could call them the "blackscarves"/"redsleeves"/whatever.
Oh, you are here too, you Kasrkin hater
Just kidding of course, but as I've read a couple of posts now on this subject thoughts has begun to bounce in the old head of mine. And I came up with an idea. Now it might not be what you invisioned and then just ignore it, but what you are after is basically heavily armoured, fancy arabic-inspired elite soldiers, right?
Now, GW have never made that but they've done something quite similar.
Just chop the furhat of and add a turban made from GreenStuff and you might well have what you have been looking for.
Now, I don't have any Vostroyan minis, so I haven't been able to try it out in RL, but I made a mega quick try-out in PS and came up with this
You would of course have to base it and paint it differently, even add some tubes to the old gun to get the real thing, but maybe it will work.
I've only flipped through the IG codex my buddy has (drooling as usuall) but I don't particualrly remember rebreathers being an item or wargear for the Stormtroopers, ISTs, or Grenadiers. If I'm correct, don't worry about it! WYSIWYG is the key term here. If they automatically have rebreathers, then yes, please consider modeling them.
If you feel you must model the rebreathers, here are some options:
1. The Talleran-style turban/facemask is made up of thick, carbon-laced fibers and filters or somehow else doubles as a rebreather.
2. Possibly model a rebreather apparatus to thier belts or webbing; something akin to a small gas-canister, hose, and nose/mouth mask. I believe a few neromunda models have something similar. Maybe look at the Steel Legion range too, they have multiple types of gas-masks and equipment. Or even better yet, find out what your N.African WWII troops used and model something similar. remember, they dont particularly have to be actually wearing the mask, just modeled on their person.
3. Forget it altogether! Don't model them if you don't like thier look. Remember, its your army, you're the one thats converting and painting it, you should like how it looks! If another player gives you a hard time about the rebreathers, tell them they've all had Chem-Dog style bionic lung implants. Hey, they're IST's right? The =I= would be willing to eat the cost of such an endeavor for thier fighting elite.
Well, thats my two cents! Hope its helped!
What i have done is 1) remodel the guns... I have Pics of them in a recent conversion thread. Basically i combine a boltgun and a lasgun. 2) then i take a tau firewarrior, cut his legs up so you remove the "hoof" part, then cut up a cadian leg, so that the boots are intact. Combine them, and viola! You have a cool looking soldier. If you really want to get indepth, you can then add night vision goggles (i cut down some scout bits) and attached with a small bit of plasticard. 3) Also, if you want the whole gun with a cable, use lots of Vox casters, cut them up, and then use really small guitar wires to connect the two. Thats what i do on mine, -the guitar wirevox casters...

Ok, well, I already know how the ISTs are going to look -- I'm combining the SM scouts with Cadians. Hellgun will be bits of the standard lasgun and SM shotgun put together. Head will be standard Cadian with rebreather made out of greenstuff. Will post pics when done.
Now, for the IG troopers, I think I've got the mask issue solved. I think I'll use Cadian helmets, but for the mask use something that looks like the Tusken Raiders, or "Sand People" from Star Wars.
As for the armour, yeah, I can greenstuff armour plating onto almost anything, I imagine. Maybe a special paint scheme is all I need to differentiate. The Forge World Mukaali Rough Riders (one of which I WILL buy someday!) appear to painted with a lot of gold (unless that's just shiny paint) and red. Hmmm... will have to think about this.
